Pumpkin Season Has Returned!

Hurray for the all-glorious GOURD! Every year around this time, pumpkins can be found at every corner for purchase and harvest. It's a wonderful reminder of this bountiful season and the changes it brings. As we use these pumpkins for decoration and consumption, let's remember that they are incredibly rich in nutrients and continue to offer so much life even after they have passed their prime. If you are wondering what to do with them for disposal, do not put them in the trash - put them in your green cart to become compost! But please, NO painted pumpkins or candles into the green cart.

Big Items? No Big Deal!

DON'T DUMP! If you, or someone you know, need to dispose of some large items that don't fit into the curbside carts, your waste hauler can help with that! In the Salinas Valley, your waste hauler is either WM (formerly Waste Management), Tri-Cities Disposal & Recycling, or Republic Services. Give them a call and schedule your bulky item pickup! Most of these services are offered for FREE. Learn more about your eligibility for a free additional pickup by clicking the link below.

Why No Compostables?

We get this question a lot - can we put compostables in the green cart? Can we bag our food scraps to toss at home? The answer is no, and the reason is layered.

We know you want to do the right thing, and compostables are a step in the right direction. However, on the operational side of handling all the organic materials that come into the compost facility, it can create more work and increases the costs and environmental harm to the community. Let's take a compostable fork, for example:

  • A compostable fork and a plastic fork can look extremely similar when handling and sorting out trash from literal tons of organic material.
  • Compostable forks don't always breakdown in a commercial composting setting quick enough, thus they get screened out and sent to the landfill, which is costly.
  • Compostable food service ware is known to contain "forever chemicals" like per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), which break down slowly in the environment.

For these reasons, we cannot accept these materials if we want to produce quality compost for the community. If you're searching for alternatives to disposable plastic and polystyrene foam, please consider durables/reusables.
