With the help of a generous contribution from The Women’s Fund, The Shasta Family YMCA was able to pivot their services and start a day camp for children of essential workers during the COVID shutdown beginning in March of 2020. They repurposed their staff and facilities to provide enrichment, snacks, lunch and emergency care in a safe and healthy environment that complied with safety guidelines established by the Public Health Department. Because of The Women’s Fund Grant, they were also able to offer financial assistance of up to 50% of the total cost of camp for families who qualified. From March to June, they provided care for over 200 children of frontline workers.
One grateful parent- a local Lieutenant- wrote the following letter:
To the YMCA Camp Staff,
I wanted to express my sincere appreciation for the outstanding environment you provided for my children, Taylor and Bryant over this last week of July. I am extremely grateful you allowed their enrollment on such short notice. Both Taylor and Bryant have expressed how AMAZING the staff has been. It was so gratifying to see their smiling faces upon pick up, as they could not wait to tell me about their day. I want to thank your staff for making my kids feel special and affirming them. Your program is special, as well as your staff, and provided me a peace of mind that is unparalleled in other programs. You provide a true service to the community!! Thank you for all you do!
Respectfully,
Lieutenant B.L.
