Happy Fall from the Sheridan Owls!

As we move further into autumn, we are enjoying the crisp mornings, the colorful leaves, and our beautiful new building.

While experiential education is always a big part of our learning at Sheridan, the fall really showcases the depth of our program and the opportunities it offers our students to challenge themselves, try new things, and expand their learning.

Building Belonging at Sheridan

At Sheridan, belonging is everything. During the first months of school, many of our activities are focused on cultivating a respectful, kind, inclusive school community.

All K-8 students participate in generating and voting on our All School Rules. Students brainstorm ideas for values that matter to them, and craft these values into suggested community rules. They then vote on over 20 different rules to choose our core All School Rules, which remind us what it means to be part of the Sheridan community. This year's rules are:

  • Be brave and challenge yourself
  • Be kind and include everyone
  • Treat others how they want to be treated
  • Take care of the earth, the community, and the school

These values are reflected in how we learn, collaborate, and celebrate one another every day.

We then celebrate Building Belonging Week, which is a week of intentional community-building moments that culminates in each student signing our "No Place for Hate" banner.

Experiential Education: Exploring the outdoors and our city

Our 3rd-8th Grade students just completed their Mountain Campus trips. At your Sheridan visit, be sure to ask our 7th and 8th Grade student ambassadors about their high-adventure Expeditions and Sustainability Labs.

Other recent field trips our students have taken include:

  • A Kindergarten trip to Woodend Nature Sanctuary
  • 1st and 2nd Grade "Mountain Campus in the City" day at Calleva
  • Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd Grade trip to the Adventure Theater
  • The 4th Grade Boat Trip on the Mildred Belle, a historic Chesapeake buyboat

Performing Arts: Students in Concert and the Fall Play

Students in Concert is a beloved Sheridan tradition that offers a chance to take the stage and shine! Any Sheridan student who takes music lessons, either after school on campus or privately, is invited to share a piece with the whole school.

Last week, we heard from musicians from 2nd-8th Grade performing violin, piano, guitar, drums, and vocal pieces, with a repertoire ranging from Taylor Swift to Vivaldi.

Next weekend, we'll have a chance to see our 7th and 8th Graders in the Fall play, Ghostlight by Stephen Gregg. If you're interested in coming to a show (Friday 11/7 at 6:30 pm or Saturday 11/8 at 5:00 pm), please reach out to us at admissions@sheridanschool.org for more information. Note: this show is appropriate for 4th Graders and up.
