Día del Padre: Normalizing "I love you" - North County Informador

By Beatriz Palmer According to the US Census, in the United States today, nearly 1 in 4 children-17.6 million-live without a biological, step, or adoptive father in the home. The absence of a father figure is more than a personal loss-it's a social issue with deep and lasting consequences.

San Diego League of Women Voters Chapters Call for Humane Immigration Policy and Due Process for All Los capítulos de la Liga de Mujeres Votantes de San Diego piden una política migratoria humana y el debido proceso para todos y todas

The League of Women Voters of San Diego and the LWV of North County San Diego stand in solidarity with our immigrant communities. The LWV supports a system that allows individuals living in the country without legal permission to earn legal status, including citizenship, by paying taxes, studying civics, and meeting other relevant criteria. Until meaningful policy reform is achieved, the League stands against deporting these immigrants who have no history of major and/or violent criminal activity.

The League supports the following criteria for legal admission to the United States:

  • Family reunification of spouses or minor children with authorized immigrants or citizens
  • Flight from persecution or response to humanitarian crises in home countries
  • U. S. economic, business, and employment needs
  • U. S. education and training needs
  • Educational program opportunities
  • Lack of a history of major and/or violent criminal activity

The LWV supports the right of all individuals, including immigrants, to fair treatment under the law, including due process, the right to a fair hearing and appeal, and humane treatment.

Dr. Patricia Prado-Olmos, Chief Community Engagement Officer at CSUSM

"Education is the catalyst for progress... the foundation for the success of not only our students, but our entire region," says Dr. Star Rivera-Lacey, the president and superintendent of Palomar College and once a community college student.

San Marcos is home to both Palomar College and Cal State San Marcos, providing opportunity for all North County students.

Palomar offers not only a path to four-year college but also direct career training programs, health career paths, professional internships, and much more.

Dr. Rivera-Lacey says Palomar college has something for everyone. Nearly 45% of students receive financial aid, and 70% identify as ethnically diverse.

Dr. Patricia Prado-Olmos, Chief Community Engagement Officer at CSUSM, highlights the role of higher education in the future prosperity of San Marcos and North County overall. Cal State San Marcos is growing in health and engineering fields, and "8 of 10 of its graduates choose to remain" in the area after graduation, she adds. Soon, the school will break ground on the new science and engineering building.

Dra.
