Historical Tidbit:
Strict dress code at Abington High 1921
From No Bare Knees For Abington High
Principal Puts Ban on Rolled Stockings
Abington has banned short, or rolled stockings from its high school. Friday two senior girls, who came to school with their stockings rolled down, precipitated an edict from Principal Cole, that hereafter any pupils wearing their stockings rolled down would be suspended for a ten days period.
Friday the two offending young ladies were sent from the class room. A meeting of the teaching staff was held at recess followed by a general assembly meeting at the close of school when Principal Cole laid down the new ruling.
The girls expressed a difference of opinion. Some stated they did not believe the school authorities could dictate what they should wear. A petition was circulated in protest. The girls maintained they were comfortable. The school committee didn't care to express an opinion on the matter.
The teachers admitted that rolled stockings might be comfortable but when worn in the schoolroom in conjunction with short dresses they interfered with studies.
If Abington girls care to continue their studies at the High school they must forgo the display of dimpled knees until next summer at the seashore.
