Nearly 80 agree; it’s
nice to be out again
|
Nearly 80 guests agreed Thursday night – it’s great to be back out, among people.
Chamber Copper member Casa de la Luz and newly annexed Oro Valley business The Westward Look Wyndham Grand Resort and Spa hosted your Chamber’s first evening mixer in … a really long time.
The food was exceptional, the venue lovely, the guests appreciative, the door prizes plentiful. Wendy Wise and Merissa Fazio enjoyed a selfie, above.
“We’re thrilled to be part of the Oro Valley family,” said Mary Beth Seamands, director of sales and marketing at the Westward Look.
The resort has undergone a renovation of public space and guest rooms; Thursday’s event was held in a newly finished space. The Westward Look is fully open, with rooftop yoga, a spa “with excellent services,” a pool, fine dining and so much more, Seamands said.
Chef Todd Sicolo and his staff prepared delicious food and drink. Seamands said the Westward Look is now in partnership with the Tucson Botanical Gardens, providing restaurant and catering services at that institution.
David Fife, director of social services at Casa de la Luz, told the story of an 80-ish Casa de la Luz client, exhausted by illness and the challenges of aging. Her daughters were in anguish; “the last thing they wanted was to see their mom suffer through the end of life,” he said.
Casa’s team took Mom to a more comfortable, stronger place, both physically and emotionally. And Casa asked the question – “what’s most important to you?” Time with family, she said, and the energy to enjoy meals and visits with children, grandchildren, friends.
She lived 3 more months. “The daughters got to see her live fully those last 90 days,” Fife said. That’s the objective of hospice services – to live fully, every day.
Casa de la Luz has been sold to LHC Group, with the official date of sale July 1. “The core leadership team is the same as it always has been,” Fife said, and the care staff is intact, too. “We’re all here,” he said.
Among the door prizes – 4 $50 gift cards from the Shop OV campaign, a night’s stay with spa package at the Westward Look, and many, many more.
Our next customer development event runs from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, July 8, The Salted Pig American Barbeque in Oro Valley. Purchase your ticket here! Tickets cannot be purchased at the door.

Casa de la Luz administrator Piper Frithsen, director of social services David Fife, founder and CEO Agnes Poore and director of nursing Jommel Fischer enjoyed an evening of network development ... and time together.

“The American Legion Oro Valley Post 132 has, for years, been a steadfast ray of hope to our local, less fortunate veterans by providing care and assistance when most needed,” a release said. “If you would like to help your local veterans service organization that has everything going for it except money, please consider helping us to continue to make a material difference in the lives of local Tucson veterans in need. We are making a difference.

ICS seeks gifts for youth enrichment
|
Chamber nonprofit member Interfaith Community Services is raising funds for its annual Youth Enrichment Support program, with a goal of raising $10,000 in June.
The Youth Enrichment Support program provides support for the many families for whom the cost of early childhood education, basic school supplies, or after-school sports or clubs are out of reach. Money raised will allow YES to offer qualified clients funding for items such as backpacks, tutoring, sports lessons / teams, and even summer camps.
“Participating in extra-curricular programs including sports, music, and the arts provides benefits to kids in the areas of physical health, social and emotional skills, and academics,” said ICS Director of Self Sufficiency Programs Lauryn Valladarez.
For information on the YES program, contact Lauryn at 520-526-9288 or [email protected], or Youth Programming and Support Coordinator Elise Smith at 520-526-9297 or [email protected].

To save energy, cash,
reduce juice, 3-7 p.m.
|
It’s hot, and getting hotter. Desert dwellers like owls, javelinas, coyotes and jackrabbits know it’s best to lay low and conserve energy during the hottest period of the day.
Tucson Electric Power customers would do well to follow their lead. By avoiding energy use between 3 and 7 p.m. during the summer, you can help keep electric service reliable and affordable while making the most of TEP’s renewable energy resources.
You can save money, too, by ...
Running your dishwasher or washing machine before you turn in for the night.
Using ceiling fans to make the air feel cooler in the late afternoons rather than running the air conditioner.
Programming your pool pump to operate at midday instead of in the late afternoon.
Pre-cooling your space before 3 p.m. by setting the thermostat three degrees lower than your preferred setting at noon before peak begins and then adjusting your thermostat higher during peak hours.
