Happy Filipina/o/x American History Month

October is a special month as we celebrate Filipina/o/x American (Fil-Am) History Month, a time to pay tribute to Filipina/o/xs' rich history, achievements, and lasting impact in the United States. This commemoration also serves as a bridge connecting Filipina/o/xs in the U.S. with their roots in the Philippines, showcasing the shared culture and heritage that binds them.

Did you know that Filipina/o/x Americans are the second-largest Asian American community in the country, and in California, they are the second-largest ethnic group? The significance of celebrating Filipina/o/x American History Month in October goes back to the very first recorded presence of Filipinos in the continental United States. It was in 1587 when Luzones Indios, native Filipino sailors forced into service by the Spanish navy during the Manila-Acapulco galleon trade, made landfall from the Spanish galleon Nuestra Senora de Esperanza at what is known today as Morro Bay, California, on October 18.

After years of relentless advocacy by dedicated individuals and organizations, the United States Congress officially recognized October as Filipino American History Month in 2009. This recognition has since been embraced by various states, counties, and cities across the nation, with many proclaiming October as a time to honor and reflect upon the incredible contributions of the Filipina/o/x-American community to our shared history and culture.

Join the EVC ASPIRE Program, ASPIRE+PLLUS, and Associated Student Government for a Filipina/o/x American History Month celebration that centers on preserving the Fil-Am history in San Jose! Enjoy spoken word, musical performances, and free food.
