SCS' New Years Resolution is to Keep

the Friday Five in Your Inbox Every Week

We hope that we have no problem keeping that resolution! We love producing the Friday Five for all to read. We want to continue delivering fun, valuable, and relevant content straight to your inbox all year long.

Another one of our resolutions is to show you the breadth of SCS' programs and services and the impact partners like COSA and donors (like many of you) help us to have. We have resources to support you or a loved one, no matter where you are on your aging journey.

This week we've got plenty of helpful tips on safe driving as we approach the snowy season, some exciting programs we're looking forward to hosting, and some ways you can stick to your New Years Resolution. Check it all out below!

Have a great weekend, and Go Birds!

1. Can You Explain SCS in Just One Word?

We admit that descirbing SCS in just one word may be very difficult, but how about in just one flyer?

3. We Are So Over Hectic Holiday Driving

Mature Drivers

As more and more Pennsylvania drivers mature, they and their families face a whole new set of challenges when it comes to operating a motor vehicle.

The fact is that we all age differently. However, there are certain physical factors that deteriorate as we age and affect our proficiency behind the wheel.

We made it through the Holiday Season! The roads become slightly more dangerous as we all have so much on our minds, but now we face the cold (possibly snow-filled) days of January and February, so we think it's a great time to remind you about safe-driving habits that are especially crucial for us as we mature.

  • Plan ahead: lengthy car trips should be made during daylight hours. Morning may be best because most people aren't as tired as they are in the afternoon.
  • Don't drive in rush-hour traffic if you can avoid it. Plan trips after 9:00 AM or before 5:00 PM. Know what roads near home are most congested and avoid them.
  • When driving long distances, especially in winter, call ahead for weather and road condition updates.
  • Look ahead. Good drivers get a jump on trouble by looking far down the road and making adjustments before encountering problems that may involve other vehicles, pedestrians, bicyclists or animals.
  • Maintain a safe speed. This depends on what the road is like, how well the driver can see, how much traffic there is and how fast traffic is moving.
  • Keep a safe distance from the vehicle ahead of you. The PA Driver's Manual advises that you should always keep a 4-second gap between you and the vehicle in front of you.

Remember your senior centers frequently host AARP's safe driving classes throughout the year. Give them a call to reserve your spot for the next class!

5. Your Guide to Sticking to

Your New Years Resolution

Is "exercise more" one of your new years resolutions? Ours too - and we know how easy it can be to let this resolution go.

Here are some tips to sticking to your resolutions like glue.

And remember - SCS centers are a GREAT way to access regular exercise classes. You'll fit right in!

Be Realistic - The most impartant part of achieving your goals is making them attainable! Try to avoid absolutes when you're setting your goals.

Take Your Time - Plan and schedule your time carefully. Decide how you will deal with the temptation to skip that exercise class or sit on the couch. This could include calling a friend from the senior center for help, remain positive when you talk to yourself or remind yourself how good you'll feel after you've made some progress toward your goal.

Don’t Keep Secrets - Tell friends and family members who will be there to support your resolve to change yourself for the better or improve your health. The best-case scenario is to find a buddy who shares your New Year’s resolution and motivate each other. Work with others to develop a Pro and Con list of relating to your goal.

Celebrate Your Small Wins - Treat yourself to something you enjoy that doesn’t contradict your resolution. On the other hand, don't beat yourself when you slip. Do your best each day - taking one day at a time.

Keep Track - Short-term goals are easier to keep, and each small accomplishment will help keep you motivated. Experts say it takes about 21 days for a new activity to become a habit and six months for it to become part of your personality. It won’t happen overnight, so be persistent and patient!

Check out the article below for info about a simple exercise that is crucial for older adults:

The #1 Exercise to Do as You Get Older

As you age, you naturally lose muscle mass, so it's important to strength train to stay strong. Ideally, you should work all of the major muscle groups in your upper and lower body at least twice a week.
