Our Lady is doing all that can be done to keep the fire ants from spreading and chigger infestation to a minimum.
Fire ants live in colonies, preferring to build the mounds in open, sunny areas. After heavy rain or watering, numerous mounds will pop up because the ants are trying to move out of the water-saturated soil.
With the current and excessive high temperatures, fire ants tunnel deep into the soil to find cooler temperatures and water, causing their mounds to be unnoticeable and making it seem as if the ants disappear. Caution needs to be taken when stepping near monuments, mulch and vegetation.
Chiggers are active from late spring to fall in most parts of Texas, but they can be active year-round in southern areas.
Chiggers are most active in the afternoon and after grass is mowed. When out in vegetation, keep moving, because the worst chigger infestations occur when sitting or lying down, especially in sunny spots at midday when temperatures are above 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Chiggers are most active in afternoons or when the ground temperature is between 77 and 86 degrees. Right now, when the temperatures rarely fall below 75 degrees until Midnight in Central Texas, chiggers are busy a long time.
There are several insect repellents that provide long-lasting protection against biting insects like mosquitoes, chiggers, and flies, allowing you to enjoy the outdoors and activities without interruption. Be sure to apply repellent as soon as you step out of your car and before you walk the grounds to visit your loved one at Our Lady.
