Unlocking hidden savings: How businesses can benefit from the $5.5 billion Visa/Mastercard settlement

In a landmark decision, Visa and Mastercard have agreed to a $5.5 billion settlement to resolve claims that they charged businesses excessive fees for processing credit card transactions.

This settlement, which covers transactions from January 1, 2004, to January 25, 2019, presents a significant opportunity for businesses to reclaim some of the hidden costs they have incurred over the years. Here’s how your business can take advantage of this settlement and potentially recover thousands of dollars.

Understanding the settlement

The class-action lawsuit against Visa and Mastercard alleged that these companies engaged in anti-competitive practices by setting fixed fees for processing credit card transactions. These practices led to inflated costs for merchants, who unknowingly paid higher fees over 15 years. The settlement aims to compensate businesses for these overcharges, allowing them to reclaim some of the fees paid during this period.

Who is eligible?

Any business that accepted Visa or Mastercard credit or debit cards between January 1, 2004, and January 25, 2019, is eligible to file a claim. This includes a wide range of industries, including restaurants, retail stores, medical offices, gas stations and hotel groups. Even businesses that have since closed or gone bankrupt can submit a claim, provided they accepted these cards during the specified period.

How much can you recover?

The amount a business can recover varies based on its processing volume. Estimates suggest that businesses could recover between $3,000 and $5,000 for every $1 million in credit card charges processed from 2004 to 2019. While this might seem modest on a per-million basis, it represents a significant opportunity to reclaim hidden fees paid over many years. For businesses with high transaction volumes, this could translate into substantial savings.

The claims process

Filing a claim is straightforward but requires timely action. The deadline to file a claim was recently extended to February 4, 2025. At this stage, businesses need only provide their employer identification number (EIN) to initiate the claim process. No proof of hidden fees is necessary at this point, simplifying the initial steps.

To file a claim, businesses should visit the official settlement website, where they can find detailed instructions and submit their claims online. It’s advisable to consult with financial advisors or firms specializing in credit card claims to help ensure all necessary information is accurately provided and to maximize the potential recovery.

The deadline to file has been extended until February 4, 2025. ***Please note, this is for informational purposes only - Our firm will not be offering this as a service for our clients.

Commentary: Cosmic Mojo Clarification In last week’s mojo I made a “call to caring action” for clients of Jill DiSalvo. This may have seemed confusing to interpret because the reason for this was not articulated in the newsletter. Briefly, for clarity sake, key employees of team Jill have suffered a painful tragedy that has thrown these members of the team into a mode that is best described as requiring coping with everyday life one day at a time. This may result in times of confusion in the tax business because new temporary hires are tasked with business as usual and/or current dedicated people stretching themselves to do the very best they can to do to deliver what is needed. Thus, to support Jill, whom I know will do everything in her power to make this time flow smoothly, I shared the request that clients be part of the solution by being timely in sending in needed documentation for tax prep.

~Thank you in advance for being understanding.

On Going and Growing with the Cosmic Flow

In numerology, the number for the year 2025 makes next year a #9 year. Thus, 2025 is just a short 17 days away.  A #9 year is considered a time of completionreflection, and closure—a year to wrap things up rather than initiate new ventures. This #9 energy helps us understand why it’s generally not recommended to start a new project in during the coming year.

The Energetic Theme of a #9 Year: Completion and Transformation

In numerology, the #9 is the final number in the single-digit cycle (following #1 through #8). This makes 2025  a time to tie up loose ends and reflect on your journey so far. The #9 year is often associated with endingstransitions, and letting go. Rather than starting fresh, it's a time to release what no longer serves you—whether that's an old project, a relationship, or a way of thinking.

Here are the core themes of a #9 year:

  • Reflection: Reflecting on the experiences and lessons of the past 8 years.
  • Completion: Finishing unfinished business, whether that’s closing out a long-standing project or resolving emotional baggage.
  • Letting Go: Releasing anything that is outdated or holding you back.
  • Transformation: Embracing change and transformation in preparation for the new cycle that begins with the 1 year.

Why, If You Have New Project or Venture, You Might Want to Get it Started in 2024

The end of 2024, which is a #8 year, and has been an absolutely excellent time for starting new ventures So, then, if you happen to have been percolating an idea, it is highly recommended that you make some small gesture to establish that you are STARTED before 12/31. This might mean registering the name with the state, or inviting a friend for a celebratory toast to mark the beginning of the project or venture. There is no one “right” way to do this. You can claim your intent for new marking auspicious beginnings in 2024 in whatever

creative way satisfies your sense that the project or venture is launched.  Additionally, It is recommended that you not lose sight of the directive that #9 is about completing.  If you do a 2024 launch seek for what happens in 2025 be organic. Patience and consciously tuning into a common sense approach to determining what going with the flow means for you is strongly advised.

Why Avoid Starting New Projects in a #9 Year?

  1. Lack of Momentum: The #9 year is not about new beginnings; it’s about finishing and reflecting
  2. Focus on Closure: The universe often calls for you to let go of things in a #9 year.
  3. Reevaluating Priorities: The #9 year invites you to reevaluate your life and priorities. You might come to realize that the direction you thought you wanted to go in isn’t right for you anymore.
  4. Emotional and Spiritual Focus: This year tends to have a more introspectiveemotional, and spiritual energy. Instead of focusing on launching a new business or starting a new venture, you're better served by turning inward to heal, grow, and evolve.
  5. Cycles of Growth: In numerology, life operates in cycles of 9 years. At the end of the #9-year cycle, you're reaching the end of a chapter, which is the natural time to prepare for a new cycle (starting with the #1 year).

What Should You Focus on During a #9 Year?

  • Finish What You Started: A #9 year is about bringing projects, relationships, or situations

to a satisfying conclusion. If you have been working on something for a while, now is the time to complete it, close that chapter, and make peace with it.

  • Clear Emotional Clutter: This is the perfect time to release emotional baggage, old resentments, or attachments to things that no longer serve your highest good.
  • Personal Growth: A #9 year is a time of transformation and self-discovery. Focus on growth, healing, and preparing for the new opportunities that will come with the next #1 year.
  • Helping Others: The #9 energy is often associated with compassionhumanitarianism, and spirituality. It's a great year for helping others or contributing to causes that resonate with your deeper values.

Transition to a #1 Year

If you do the inner work when you reach the end of the #9 year, you’ll be ready to step into a new cycle that begins with the #1 year. The #1 year is about new beginningsfresh starts, and asserting your independence. Starting new projects in the #1 year has the supportive energy of initiation, enthusiasm, and the spark of innovation.

In contrast, the #9 year is the time to pausereflect, and prepare for the new growth that will blossom in the #1 year. If you allow yourself to complete things during the #9 year, you'll be entering the #1 year with a clean slate, free of the past’s baggage and ready for the exciting opportunities ahead.

In Conclusion: The #9 Year as a Time of Completion

In numerology, the #9 year is a year of ending and transition, not one for launching fresh new initiatives. It’s a time to reflect, finish what’s been started, clear the emotional slate, and prepare for the fresh beginnings of the following year (#1 year).

PS. There is a cosmically intense Full Moon on December 15.  Unfortunately, there is no editorial space herein to adequately share about it. Should you want to learn about its influence I recommend you Google: Pam Gregory Astrologer, New Moon. She has an excellent presentation on this topic.
