Ikigai is a Japanese term that blends two words: “iki” meaning “to live,” and “gai” meaning “reason,” which translates to “a reason to live.” It's a concept that encourages people to discover what truly matters to them and to live a life filled with purpose and joy.

10 Lessons from Ikigai: The Japanese Secret to a Long and Happy Life

1. Find what you love to do and what brings you joy and fulfilment. Your ikigai is often found at the intersection of what you love, what you are good at, what the world needs, and what you can be paid for.

2. Have a clear sense of purpose and meaning in your life. Knowing your reason for being can provide direction and motivation in everything you do.

3. Engage in activities that keep you physically, mentally, and emotionally active. Stay curious and continue learning throughout your life.

4. Embrace challenges and setbacks as opportunities for growth. Develop resilience and perseverance in the face of adversity.

5. Build and maintain strong connections with others. Cultivate meaningful relationships with family, friends, and community members.

6. Strive for balance in all aspects of your life, including work, leisure, relationships, and personal development. Avoid extremes and seek harmony.

7. Be present in the moment and fully engage in whatever you are doing. Practice mindfulness and gratitude to appreciate the simple pleasures of life.

8. Simplify your life by focusing on what truly matters and letting go of unnecessary clutter, both physical and mental.

9. Embrace change as a natural part of life and an opportunity for growth. Be flexible and open-minded in adapting to new circumstances.

10. Connect with nature and appreciate its beauty and healing power. Spend time outdoors and cultivate a sense of awe and wonder.
