Frequency Friday: A Tax Planning Opportunity for Business Owners

As your business grows, the way your business is structured can have a meaningful impact on your taxes, payroll responsibilities, and long-term planning.

If you are currently operating as a sole proprietor or single-member LLC, it may be worth discussing whether forming an LLC and electing to be taxed as an S corporation could make sense for you.

For the right business owner, an S corporation structure may help reduce self-employment tax by allowing part of the business income to be paid as reasonable W-2 wages and part as owner distributions.

That said, this strategy is not a fit for everyone. The IRS requires S corporation shareholder-employees who provide services to the business to be paid reasonable compensation before taking non-wage distributions, and the IRS can reclassify distributions as wages if compensation is too low.

Corporate officers who perform services are generally treated as employees for federal payroll tax purposes. That is why officer payroll is an important part of using the S corporation strategy correctly.

Running payroll helps keep the business compliant, supports retirement plan contributions, creates a clearer separation between owner compensation and profit distributions, and helps avoid problems if the return is reviewed.

If your business is producing consistent profit, this may be a good time to evaluate:

  • Whether an LLC taxed as an S corporation is appropriate for you
  • What a reasonable officer salary should be
  • How much you may be able to take as distributions
  • The added costs of payroll, tax filings, and entity maintenance
  • Whether the potential tax savings outweigh the administrative requirements

If you have an S-corporation but are not paying yourself on W-2 salary, we should schedule a time to chat! The IRS is cracking down on this topic and we should discuss what this would entail for your business.

I would be happy to review your situation and estimate whether this strategy may benefit you before you make any changes. Feel free to schedule a mid-year tax planning session on my calendar: https://calendly.com/jdisalvo-accountant

With Gratitude,

Jill & Team

There is a quiet shift that happens when we stop gripping so tightly to how life should unfold. A softening. Not giving up— but releasing the belief that everything meaningful must be chased or forced.

This week, I’ve been reflecting on what it means to receive with grace. To create space for beauty, support, clarity, and abundance to meet me naturally. Because not everything aligned arrives through struggle. Sometimes the most beautiful things bloom when we slow down enough to notice them.

So I am choosing softness. Softness in how I move through life. Softness in how I speak to myself. Softness in trusting what is unfolding. Not forcing the bloom. Not rushing the season. Just allowing life to meet me where I am—with grace.

The Gift of Taurus: Deep Gratitude for What Sustains Us

As the Sun journeys through Taurus on Mother’s Day and for the following 12 days, life gently invites us to slow down, settle in, and take stock of what truly supports us. Taurus, ruled by Venus and aligned with the 2nd house of value and resources, reminds us that our lives are built not only on dreams and ambitions—but on tangible systems, comforts, and resources that quietly keep everything running. This is the season when appreciation becomes a form of abundance. And, every year at this time we have the added bonus of time set aside to honor and appreciate motherly love.

Deep Respect

Taurus energy has a deep respect for “stuff”, however, not in a superficial sense. Rather, similar to mother love, it honors the world as sacred. The roof over your head, the chair you sit in, the phone in your hand, the food in your kitchen—these are not just objects; they are allies in your daily experience. They represent stability, effort, and often unseen networks of support. During this time, we are encouraged to shift from taking these things for granted to recognizing them as meaningful contributors to our well-being.

Gratitude

In a world that often pushes us toward constant striving and future-focused thinking, Taurus season gently anchors us in the present. It asks: What is already working? What already supports

me? Gratitude, in this context, is not just a polite gesture—it is a grounding force. When we consciously appreciate what we have, we strengthen our sense of security and create a more receptive field for continued abundance.

This is also an ideal time to reconnect with the sensory pleasures of life. Notice the softness of your surroundings, the flavors of your meals, the beauty in your environment. Taurus teaches that pleasure is not indulgent—it is restorative. When we allow ourselves to fully experience the richness of the physical world, we reinforce a sense of worthiness and contentment that no external achievement alone can provide.

On Taking Action

Consider creating small rituals of gratitude. Take a moment each day to acknowledge the things that make your life function more smoothly—your transportation, your workspace, your finances, your body, your routines. Even the simplest conveniences hold immense value when viewed through a lens of appreciation.

Ultimately, Taurus season reminds us that a fulfilling life is not built solely on what we are chasing—but on what we are consciously valuing. When we honor what supports us, we deepen our connection to stability, pleasure, and peace. And from that grounded place, we are far better equipped to grow.

Gratitude is not just recognition—it is resonance. And in Taurus season, what we appreciate… appreciates. Learn how this season can be best expressed by your Sun, Moon and Ascendant
