Do you have a 529 Plan for your Kids?

A 529 plan is basically a special savings account designed to help you (or your family) pay for education.

It’s named after Section 529 of the IRS code, but the main idea is: you put money in, it grows tax-free, and you can take it out tax-free if it’s used for qualified education expenses.

Two Main Types

  1. College Savings Plans
  • Works like an investment account (you choose stock/bond funds).
  • Money grows over time.
  • Can be used for:
  • College tuition & fees
  • Books, computers, supplies
  • Some K–12 private school tuition (up to $10,000/year)
  • Certain apprenticeship programs
  • Up to $10,000 in student loan repayment
  1. Prepaid Tuition Plans
  • Let you lock in today’s tuition rates for future college costs (usually at in-state public schools).
  • Not as flexible as savings plans.

The Tax Benefits

  • Federal: Money grows tax-free, and withdrawals for qualified expenses are not taxed.
  • Gift Tax Perk: You can contribute up to $19,000/year per person (or $38,000 for couples) without triggering gift taxes — or “front-load” 5 years’ worth at once.

Who Can Use It

  • Anyone can open one (parents, grandparents, friends).
  • The beneficiary (the student) can be changed — so if your kid doesn’t go to college, you can name another child, yourself, or even a grandchild.

The Catch

  • If you take money out for non-education purposes, you’ll owe:
  • Income tax on the earnings
  • A 10% penalty on those earnings

Why People Love It

  • Flexible — works for many types of education.
  • Big tax savings over time.
  • You stay in control of the money — not the student.

💡 Super simple summary:

Think of a 529 plan as a tax-advantaged, education-focused investment account that lets your money grow faster because the IRS does not get to take a cut of the earnings — as long as you spend it on school-related costs.

Astro Background: A planetary retrograde is an optical illusion that is created by the relative positions of Earth and a planet and its orbit. From an earthy perspective, the planet appears to slow down, stop, and move backward in the sky before resuming forward motion. This apparent reversal—retrograde motion has been tracked for thousands of years, and astrologers associate it with inspiring review, reflection, and the reappearance of unresolved matters connected to the planet’s theme.

About the Recent “Notorious” Mercury Retrograde

Personal commentary: I refer to Mercury Retrograde as “notorious” because in my experience and for others with whom I talk about everyday matters, Mercury Retrograde has historically been clearly known to live up to its reputation for being a royal pain. (Examples include: Contracts gone bad, relationships fractured, travel plans disrupted). In my experience this most recent Mercury Retrograde has been a doozie. This alert hopefully it will serve for you to take note and hopefully avoid potential hiccups.

Mercury retrograde is known for communication glitches, tech malfunctions, travel delays, and the resurfacing of old conversations occurring when Mercury appears to backtrack in the sky. This recent Mercury retrograde in Leo, (the sign designated with the symbol of the lion), officially ended on the evening of August 11. And, however, we’re still moving through what is known as the retrograde shadow period (or the “retro- shade”).

During this shadow period, Mercury will retrace the degrees it covered while in retrograde motion. This means that from Earth’s perspective, it’s moving forward but still passing through the same section of the zodiac where the delays, missteps, or lessons first occurred. The shadow period acts like an “integration phase” a time to tie up loose ends, correct mistakes, or take action on insights we gained during the retrograde.

For everyday life, this means that while the worst of the retrograde disruption is over, the lingering effects may still need attention. Misunderstandings can still be cleared, contracts revised, and tech issues resolved. The lesson? Don’t rush back to “business as usual” just yet. Take advantage of this cosmic clean-up period to make intentional choices, especially in the areas Mercury rules: thinking, speaking, writing, travel, and technology.

We all carry invisible wounds—deep emotional imprints from childhood, family systems, and ancestral legacies. They shape how we love, trust, protect, and relate. They inform the stories we live by, often without our conscious awareness.

This 12-week transformational group program is a guided journey into the heart of these core wounds, offering a sacred space to name them, understand them, and begin to alchemize them into wisdom. Through rich weekly teachings, somatic practices, ritual, journaling, and community, you’ll explore how to come home to the parts of yourself you’ve long abandoned—and begin the process of reclaiming your wholeness.
