Tenth Annual Gala Raises Funds for Inaugural President's Leadership Institute Cohort

Have you heard about the PLI? Introduced at the Tenth Annual Gala, the new Chabot College President’s Leadership Institute (PLI) seeks to prevent Chabot students from leaving college or stopping-out before they complete their educational goal. PLI provides financial, social, and academic support to promote degree and certificate completion and/or transfer.

PLI is a 1-year cohort program that targets students who are mid-way through their academic and/or career education programs. Students will meet monthly with the Chabot College President to build community and leadership skills. Other major program components include:

  • Full payment of Chabot College tuition and fees & assistance with financial aid applications
  • Annual stipend for technology, books, and other educational materials
  • Special honor and recognition at commencement
  • Career development supports such as resume review and support with cover letters
  • Life Planning skills and support (Short-, mid-, and long-term goal setting)
  • Letter of recommendation from the Chabot President

The philosophy that underlies PLI is the belief that whole person growth is vital for student success inside and outside of the classroom.

We are proud to share that the Tenth Annual Gala raised $13,300 for the inaugural PLI cohort!

Celebrating Native American Heritage Month

Courtesy of IPEA Circle

As Native American Heritage Month comes to a close, we want to take a moment to reaffirm the importance of honoring Native peoples, our students, staff, communities, and lands. Throughout November, Chabot's Indigenous Peoples Education Association (IPEA) has been privileged to gather with members of the campus community to celebrate, learn, and engage in meaningful dialogue. IPEA honored Native American Heritage month in several ways, including:

  • hosting an inspiring student-led panel, where voices from across Turtle Island shared their experiences and visions for the future;
  • visiting the Oakland Museum of California’s exhibition, Born of the Bear Dance: Dugan Aguilar’s Photographs of Native California, providing a profound exploration of Native life, resilience, and cultural heritage;
  • creating an ofrenda/altar and holding a ceremony;
  • hosting the Honoring Local Tribes Through Public Art event;
  • announcing a new scholarship for indigenous students; and
  • receiving an Indigenous People’s Day and Native American Heritage Month proclamation from the Hayward City Council.

Veterans Day Celebration

On November 12, Chabot hosted a Veterans Day Celebration in the beautifully decorated Veterans Resource Center (VRC). In attendance were Veteran students, staff, and friends who celebrated with burgers, links, desserts, and great conversation. Event highlights include a celebration video to honor our veterans and the dedication of the Prisoner of War and Missing in Action (POW MIA) table. This table was created to memorialize our missing soldiers and reserve a table for them during celebrations. Each placement was meticulously put together with meaning placed throughout each object. Learn more about the VRC below.

Visit to The White House

On November 13, President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden welcomed approximately 200 education and workforce leaders, including Chabot College President Dr. Jamal Cooks, to the White House for the Biden-Harris Administration’s “Classroom to Career” Summit.

The Summit brought together Cabinet members and other senior Administration officials, state and local elected officials, community college presidents, K-12 leaders, unions, workforce development leaders from the nine White House Workforce Hubs and other communities across the country, business leaders, representatives of philanthropic organizations, and students.

At the Summit, President Biden announced that more than $80 billion from his American Rescue Plan has now been committed to strengthening and expanding the American workforce, from supporting high-quality free community college programs in high-demand fields, to expanding Registered Apprenticeships, to attracting and retaining a skilled, diverse workforce in critical industries. These efforts are helping students and workers, including those without four-year degrees, access good-paying opportunities spurred by the Investing in America agenda. Read more in the White House’s fact sheet.
