How To: Carve a Turnip-o-Lantern

Set aside your pumpkins for a fun and historic alternative: turnips! In the Celtic legend of Jack O’ Lantern, Jack was a man who tricked the devil. As a result of this prank, he was forced to wander the earth after this death, lighting his way by hiding embers in a hollowed-out turnips (the tradition of the pumpkin originated in America where they are far more plentiful). Are you applying to college for Fall 2020? Applying to college - whether to attend in the fall, or after taking a Gap Year - is a process that takes time. This fall, Oak Meadow has had more students completing EARLY applications (Early Decision or Action) than in previous years, which is a sign of great planning.  Congrats to all, and may the decisions come back in your favor! If your student is planning to submit applications in January, your process should be well underway. Here are a couple of tips/reminders: Make contact NOW with people who will submit recommendations for you.  Six weeks of advance notice is respectful and helpful, but asking only one or two weeks ahead is not enough (and may mean your recommendation isn't written in time). Our college counselor KD Maynard is available to consult Oak Meadow enrolled students, via email or Zoom. Independent users can also receive her college counseling services by purchasing them in our bookstore.
