Happy Hearts is all about learning. Just as our children learn through play every day – so do our teachers maintain their professional knowledge and continue learning throughout their careers. This ensures we combine experience with the latest programmes and up-to-date developments in our industry.
Room 3 teachers, Marie and Tarryn, have started a Professional Development course about Literacy in Early Childhood. The Oral Language and Literacy Initiate (OLLi), provided by the Ministry of Education, has a focus on supporting oral language and emergent literacy skills.
Room 3 will maintain a focus around supporting emergent literacy skills such as oral language, building vocabulary, expanding children's understanding of stories, fostering the development of print knowledge and building phonological awareness.
One such activity is the Room 3 Holiday Project. Thank you to the parents for supporting this project with the holiday forms you have completed for your child. This has created an opportunity for the children to develop and practice their oral language skills. Each of them has had an opportunity to share their holiday experiences with the class. The next stage is to compile the Room 3 Book which will provide concrete experiences to develop their book knowledge. For example, title, characters, authors and illustrators, front and back covers, blurb, pages, etc. They also have the opportunity to develop knowledge that pictures can be read for meaning, just as words can. This is an exciting time for our new Room 3 people.
