Pennsylvania's newly expanded child and dependent care tax credit

The House Appropriations Committee Majority Chairman Jordan Harris spoke about Pennsylvania's newly expanded child and dependent care tax credit on Tuesday. The expansion is focused on helping working families with children in the state find affordable care for their dependents. "Childcare costs have continued to increase for Pennsylvanians and for working families across this commonwealth," Harris said. "We also know that childcare is workforce development, and that families are not able to enter the workforce unless they have reliable and affordable childcare/" The tax credit increases are dependent on income: Less than $43,000 with one child, rising from $315 to$1,050. Less than $43,000 with two or more children, rising from $630 to $1,050. More than $43,000 with one child, rising from $180 to $600. More than $43,000 with two or more children, $1,200. "There are seven districts within Central Pennsylvania that have a higher than state percentage of families making under $43,000," said Rep. Carol Hill Evans, D-95 (which covers York County) at the event.

Pennsylvania's draft broadband plan balances infrastructure with digital skills

Officials with the Pennsylvania Broadband Development Authority are focused on ensuring that all residents are equipped with the necessary devices and skills as the state prepares to dole out billions of dollars from the federal government in hopes of closing the digital divide. Through the numerous surveys, public meetings, roundtables and focus groups, state officials uncovered three overlapping themes: access, affordability and the need for improved digital skills among residents, they said during a virtual public comment session on Monday. "We don't just want to build the infrastructure without ensuring that our residents are able to effectively and successfully use it," Kirsten Compitello, national broadband digital equity director with the consulting firm Michael Baker International, said during the session. "we know that having internet access is not enough to fulfill this vision. We also need for every resident in Pennsylvania to be capable a successful when they get online." With historic federal investments in broadband expansion through Congress and the National Telecommunications and Information Administration, many states are soliciting feedback from their residents in hopes of providing reliable and universal access to high-speed internet.

Community Improvement Award Nominations Now Being Accepted


Once again, the Huntingdon County Chamber of Commerce has partnered with the Huntingdon County Planning Commission to present Community Improvement Awards for projects completed in 2023. The Awards will be presented at the Planning Commission’s March Annual Dinner. 


Community Improvement Award nominations are being accepted in the categories of New Construction, Preservation, Community Spirit, and Special Merit. Nominations are due January 2024 by 4:00 p.m. Once nominations are submitted, applications will be sent to the nominees.

UC Fraud and UC-1099G Tax Forms


Victim of unemployment fraud?
Criminals using stolen identities filed claims for unemployment compensation in other people's names. Because unemployment compensation is taxable, state unemployment agencies submit Forms 1099-G to individuals in whose names and Social Security numbers the unemployment compensation was paid and to the IRS. Victims of fraud who receive Forms 1099-G with inaccurate amounts of unemployment compensation in Box 1 should notify the state agencies of the inaccuracies and request corrected Forms 1099-G. Taxpayers should only report income they actually received on their tax returns. Do not report income you did not receive. The IRS offers tax guidance to victims at https://www.irs.gov/identity-theft-fraud-scams/identity-theft-and-unemployment-benefits.
