Building a Foundation for the Future

Letter from Dr. Luft

Dear Putnam Valley Community:

As we approach the holiday season, I continue to be impressed by our students each and every day. Their resiliency, perseverance, and talents are on display in our classrooms, on our stages, and through athletic competition.

Our professional staff members have been immersed in several district initiatives. The Elementary School continues its professional learning and implementation of their new reading program. Putnam Valley Middle School has begun the extensive process toward becoming an International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program school. Putnam Valley High School continues to find innovative ways to offer students more rigorous and meaningful instruction. It is important to note that our dedicated staff finds ways to simultaneously balance the implementation of instructional programs with the many ways they support the social-emotional well-being of our students, serving as role models and mentors, and instilling them with skills that will best prepare them for their future endeavors. There is always much to be proud of in the Putnam Valley School District.

Please enjoy some recent highlights in this newsletter and be sure to take a look at our new communications guide.

Through the hard work of a District Advisory Council, consisting of teachers, administrators, and parents, we have completed the creation of a Whom to Contact Document. The purpose of this document is to empower parents to reach out to the appropriate people to help support their children. Direct contact will always be the most effective and beneficial way to ask questions and receive accurate information. Please consider referring to this document the next time you hear something that does not sound accurate, have a question about your child’s education, or have a concern; we are here to help!

Wishing everyone a happy and healthy holiday season. I am looking forward to seeing everyone in 2023.

Take care and stay well.

Sincerely,

Dr. Jeremy Luft

Superintendent of Schools

The PVHS Diner held a “soft opening” in November. With the help of Natalie Doherty and Melissa Estrella, Mr. Glenn and Mrs. Kruse re-launched a program through which students engage in cooking, serving, hosting, and other functions of a fully operational restaurant. The Diner has seen many visitors in the past who come to the high school in awe of our Diner and Friends Network programs. The students learn great soft skills needed for employment and learn the value of serving the broader community. There are many things that are learned from this experience that go far beyond vocational skills. The students and teachers opened the Diner fully on December 16 to the high school staff.

PVMS Student Council Gives Back: Food Drive Success!

In late November, our PVMS Student Council had an extremely successful food drive. Together we collected more than 1,389 items, which will be donated to the Putnam Valley Food Pantry, as well as other local pantries. One of our seventh-grade students, Abigail Kui, donated 492 items! We want to thank all of our students and families who donated to such a great cause over the holiday season. Thank you again for your generosity and for making our food drive an overwhelming success!

Welcoming Garrison Students

After reaching a tuition agreement with the Garrison School District to make Putnam Valley High School an option for their eighth grade students, we were recently notified that six students (nearly 25% of the current eighth grade class) will be attending our high school next year. We are looking forward to welcoming these students into our school community and hope to see additional students take advantage of this opportunity in future years. Middle School Career Day

Putnam Valley Middle School is planning a career day and is looking for volunteers to participate. Please see additional information below provided by our Middle School Counselor, Kendall Coleman.

As we begin the career exploration process, we introduce middle school students to Naviance, our school’s online program. I am working on a new initiative this year and I am looking for volunteers for our Spring 2023 Career Fair! This career fair will allow our students to see professionals from a wide range of careers, hear about what day-to-day life is like in those jobs and ask questions along the way. If you are interested in volunteering for the career fair to share your experience, please fill out this Google Form.

#TigerPride Alert:

Powerful Performances in Our Winter Concerts and Sports

Tiger Talent was on full display this winter season as we were treated to a variety of musical performances. From the November Gratitude Festival at PVHS to our Middle School Band and Chorus concerts, our students showcased their musical passions and creativity. We are so proud of the hard work and dedication these artists put into their craft, and thank you to our amazing music teachers for sharing their expertise and love for music with our students!

Winter Season is in full swing, and our students are already making us proud! Our student-athletes have returned to competition in Basketball, Wrestling, Cheer, Indoor Track, Gymnastics, Swim, and Ice Hockey. We are excited to see our students make gains and headlines as they rise to new and exciting challenges.

A Community Effort:

PVHS Students Organize Holiday Toy Drive with Donations from Every School!

On Saturday, December 17, National Honor Society Holiday Toy Drive Co-Chairs Ava McGinty and Faith Carravone delivered 30 boxes of toys from the Putnam Valley School community. This collection was the best one in the Toy Drive's history, and donations were collected from PVHS, PVMS, and PVES. The NHS held bake sales throughout the month of November to raise money to purchase toys for the children at the Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital.

Collaborative Partnerships: Bus Drivers and Assistant Principals Discuss Strategies for Safe Transportation

Last month, our three assistant principals held a meet-and-greet breakfast with our contracted bus drivers. In a conversation facilitated by Director of Facilities Dave Spittal, the APs and drivers discussed strategies to strengthen collaboration that would ensure safety for our students’ bus rides to and from school. Each building will be conducting community meetings in the near future with students to review the bus code of conduct as it relates to our PBIS (positive behavior intervention supports) practices. Mr. Spittal and the APs are planning to host more meetings with the bus drivers throughout the year.

School Delays, Dismissals, and Closures

As we begin to experience inclement weather, please make sure you have plans in place in the event we are forced to delay the opening of schools or dismiss early. Student safety is paramount when these decisions are made. Please keep in mind that the weather in the Roaring Brook community often varies from the weather we experience at our buildings and that a school bus does not drive in the snow like an SUV. There is a great deal of thought that goes into these decisions and many individuals are involved. Our process typically begins around 4 am with conversations with our buildings, grounds, and transportation staff, some of whom are already on the roads examining road conditions. Follow-up calls are made with the Putnam Valley Highway Department. At 4:30 am, Superintendents from across the region join a Zoom call to share information. Each district then makes its own determination. Every effort is made to communicate this decision with the community before 5:30 am.
