Happy Holidays from your SLYC Board!

December 20, 2024

A Holiday Message from the Commodore

Seasons greetings SLYC members!

While our beautiful lake is slowly freezing over and things feel quiet on the Stony front, your SLYC Board has been hard at work reflecting, analyzing and planning for 2025.  Our job as a board is to serve the membership and our goal as a board is to leave the club in a better place than we found it.  We have been working diligently to make this happen!

To that end we have a number of projects underway and look forward to communicating in more detail in the new year about:

  • January 2025 Membership Survey
  • Addressing the safety issue associated with overhead hydro wires
  • Reviewing costs and revenue by division to ensure balanced budgets and associated fees for membership and programs
  • Identifying future capital projects and developing a plan to fund them
  • 2025 summer jobs

In order to serve our members we need your feedback!  We will be sending a survey in early January and would love to hear from everyone.  Please keep an eye out for this and take a few minutes to share your thoughts.

I hope that everyone is enjoying this convivial time of year whether you are off on an adventure, spending time with loved ones or just relaxing by yourself.

Wishing you a safe, happy and healthy holiday.

Warm regards,

Beckie Bart

Clubhouse Renovations

We’re very exited to bring you up to date on an important project!

For the safety and enjoyment of SLYC members and to align with insurance requirements, the Stony Lake Heritage Foundation (SLHF) pursuant to its mandate of preserving heritage buildings on Stony Lake, has undertaken a project to upgrade the SLYC Clubhouse.

SLHF has engaged Christopher Z. Tworkowski, Architect, who with the help of Sandford Smith and other structural and electrical engineers, have prepared a Life Safety Assessment and plans for the building. The Life Safety Assessment describes the elements required to bring the Clubhouse up to current building and fire code standards. With the support and cooperation of the Association of Stony Lake Cottagers (ASLC), a building permit from the Township of Douro-Dummer was approved and Four Points Construction Inc. won the bid for the project. Renovation work started in September and the project is to be completed in May 2025 prior to SLYC opening for the season.

The scope of work includes:

  • Repositioning the stairs leading to the second floor from against the side of the building to new positions pointing away from the building.
  • Replacing second floor exit doors to swing outward and to be constructed of fire-rated material
  • Replacing numerous windows with fire-rated material
  • Adding blocking to the joists supporting the second floor
  • Resurfacing the second floor with new pine
  • Adding illuminated exit signs and a fire alarm system
  • Extending the ground level deck on the north side
  • Repositioning the water pump and hot water tank

SLYC is extremely grateful to the Stony Lake Heritage Foundation for supporting our community and not only funding the project but managing it from start to finish. Special thanks to Co-Chair David Hahn and engineer Sandy Smith who have been hands-on since day one.
