Sitar
India
The sitar evolved from long necked lutes that were brought to India from Central Asia and is now classified as a plucked stringed instrument.
The modern shape of the sitar began in the late Mughal Empire in the 18th and 19th centuries.
Typically a sitar measures about 4 feet in length, has a deep pear-shaped gourd body; a long, wide, hollow wooden neck; both front and side tuning pegs; and 20 arched movable frets.
In the late 50's and 60's Ravi Shankar introduced Indian classical music to western culture. George Harrison used the sitar in some of the Beatles songs. It can also be heard in some Rolling Stones songs, as well as the Doors and The Kinks.
