Arca in 2022...

There are many exciting achievements for the Arca community to look back on from this past year. Highlights for 2022 include:

  • Groundwork for migration to Islandora 2.0: A major assessment project analyzing collections, metadata, and projections of Arca's future needs was completed in preparation for migration to the new Islandora. Phase one of the Arca migration is slated to begin in 2023.

  • Launch of the Traditional Knowledge (TK) Labels module: This new module displays customized badges on objects within Arca that belong to projects with Indigenous community connections. TK Labels are used by Indigenous communities and local organizations to clarify their rights and the nature of their relationship to collections or data, and to express local and specific conditions for sharing and engaging.

  • Creation of a shared member site: Loupe, named after the tool used by jewelers to examine the facets of a gemstone, is a new shared site created to accommodate smaller partner libraries with fewer resources and limited content. Loupe was developed in response to feedback on barriers to participation in Arca.

  • Launch of the SHFCB Collection: Through a BCHDP-funded project, La Société historique francophone de la Colombie-Britannique (SHFCB) digitized over 32,000 pages from 87 publications of 38 Francophone organizations across the province, from the 1960s to the present. Using the BCHDP-Arca Hosting Service, the SHFCB was able to make their collection openly available in Arca. View the collection here: https://bchdp.arcabc.ca/shfcb

Arca continued to strengthen and build its partnerships throughout 2022. This included the second year of the BC ELN-BCHDP Support Service, which offers assistance to small GLAM sites in applying for BCHDP funds to digitize collections spotlighting BC’s history. Look forward to more news on partnership outcomes and upcoming child sites in the new year!

Looking to 2023...

Phase one of the Arca migration to Islandora 2.0 is slated to begin next year. When completed, Arca will enjoy a more scalable, sustainable architecture, improved performance, and more independent operation of each member site, while retaining the benefits of the collaborative approach.
