Shop Local Chicago

BACP encourages Chicagoans to Shop Local. When consumers make purchases from independent, locally owned businesses, a significantly greater portion of money is then cycled back through the local economy.

The Shop Local Chicago campaign aims to increases spending along commercial corridors, boosts our local economy, supports small businesses and fosters community engagement.

Chicago's Labor Laws

The BACP Office of Labor Standards (OLS) oversees Chicago's landmark labor laws, including:

  • Chicago Paid Leave and Paid Sick and Safe Leave Ordinance: Guarantees up to 40 hours of paid time off and up to 40 hours of paid sick leave for most of Chicago’s workers. Workers accrue 1 hour of each type of leave for every 35 hours worked.
  • Minimum Wage: The Chicago minimum wage increased to $16.20 on July 1, 2024. The tipped-minimum wage increased to $11.02. A 5-year phase out the subminimum wage for tipped workers commenced; the tipped-wage credit will decrease by 8% every July 1 through July 1, 2028. As a reminder, if an employees’ tips combined with their base pay at the subminimum hourly rate do not add up to the standard minimum wage, employers are required to make up the difference.
  • Fair Workweek Ordinance: Employees are covered by the ordinance if they work in one of seven covered industries (Building Services, Healthcare, Hotels, Manufacturing, Restaurants, Retail, and Warehouse Services), earn less than or equal to $31.85/hour or earn less than or equal to $61,149.35/year, and the employer has at least 100 employees globally (250 employees and 30 locations for a restaurant).
