Seasonal Wishes to You from IASWG and Toronto!

In Canada winter has truly arrived. We have experienced the cold and snowy weather that lets us know that the holiday season is near. To our members who live in warmer, sunnier climates, I know you are also enjoying the signs that holiday season has arrived.

It has been a busy and productive year for IASWG. Our 2019 symposium was a great success. We have had a number of wonderful local events offered by our chapters. At our recent board meeting we welcomed our Australia-New Zealand Chapter, moved ahead with our planning for the 2020 symposium in New York City and began supporting our Lithuania Chapter in their plans to host a symposium in 2021. We look forward to all that 2020 will bring, including plans for Group Work Camp in late July in Illinois.

As we enjoy this festive time, I would like to ask you to make sure that you have renewed your membership in IASWG. As a reminder, IASWG is an international organization dedicated to group work practice, education and research. It is an inclusive, welcoming organization, operated through the donation of many volunteer hours. We depend on your membership to help us continue this mission, and to offer events at a local and international level. Please take a few minutes to renew online . In addition to your membership, we welcome any and all donations that will be used to support the organization’s mission and to enhance our ability to offer increased access to our events.

As well, we invite you to submit presentation and poster abstract proposals for this upcoming year’s symposium, “ The climate is ripe for groupwork: Creating connections and restoring hope in a fragmented world .” This event will take place at New York University from June 17-20, 2020. Presentation proposals are due by January 31, 2020 and poster proposals are due by March 6, 2020.

On behalf of the Board of IASWG, I wish you all a healthy, happy seasonal celebration and a happy new year. We look forward to seeing you in 2020!

  • Education sessions are 30 or 60 minutes, comprised of didactic learning, panel or interactive discussion, or skill building with an experiential component. The purpose of these educational discovery sessions is to give attendees exposure to a presenter's work and/or research.
  • Exploratory workshops are 90-minute sessions where the presenter is not only imparting knowledge but helping attendees develop skills through interactive and experiential activities. The primary goal of these workshops is that attendees can learn new approaches that they may bring back to their own group work practice, community work, teaching, supervising, mentoring, or group work-related research.
  • Posters are visual representations of research, practice, or training initiatives, and are displayed at designated times during the Symposium.
