What's New at the Nursery

.......by Steven Froess

Hello everyone!

The time has come for the final newsletter of 2024. All in all this year has been a good one. The holidays are here! I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving. I know I ate my fair share of amazing food. Now the Christmas cookie baking frenzy begins! I know it's just the beginning of the month, but the time goes by so fast that I must start earlier than later. I’ll be scrambling for gifts as well but luckily, we have a great selection here at the nursery.

Some of my favorite items include locally made pottery, framed butterflies, and hand-painted cards in the garden gift shop. We have a great assortment of poinsettias and princettias this year. My favorite varieties are 'Country quilt', 'Sparkling rouge', and 'Christmas beauty'. You’ll also find many colors and sizes of Christmas cactus and colorful orchids in our greenhouse.

For that someone who enjoys a unique plant where almost no two are alike, try our selection of Bonsai. We have some specially made Bonsai arrangements or DIY options for people of all skill levels.

Instead of or in addition to a cut Christmas tree, there are some awesome potted native conifers that can be decorated for the holidays and will continue to live either in a pot or planted into the garden after the holidays. Finally, we have made up an assortment of custom-potted arrangements for those charming gifts on the go.

I am happy to report that I had quite a successful year in my garden. This year I've added Eriogonum crocatum (Sulfur buckwheat), Grevillea 'Peaches and cream', Calliandra californica, and a Trichostema hybrid 'Midnight magic' to my garden.

I think I may need to focus more on my greenhouse in the coming year to re-pot and propagate as it has become quite crowded- see below. Keep a lookout in the cactus/succulent section at the nursery for some of the plants I will bring in as they become ready (they will be). I'm also happy to report that after four years, my Banksia will have a flower this winter! I will post more pictures as its blooming progresses.

Even though the holidays are here, the nursery will still be stocking plenty of great plants throughout the winter season. The cool season veggies and herbs will be resupplied weekly (even some I grew from seed!), and

Camellias are going to be in bud and bloom for the next several months as they are one of the better winter blooming shade plants.

California natives have a much higher chance of successful establishment when planted this time of the year, Leucospermum/Protea will continue to arrive as they bud and we anticipate their spring flowering show, Grevillea will continue to peak their blooms though spring, and lots of cool season bedding flowers are popping right now such as Cyclamen, Pansies, Violas, Snapdragons, Nemesia, Osteospermum, Arctotis 'Pink sugar', Carnations, Fragrant sweet peas, Icelandic poppies ('Colibri' Italian as well).

I believe next year will be an excellent year for gardening. I'm glad to see so many first-time, new gardeners telling me how much they are enjoying working in their yards.

Let's end 2024 with good feelings moving forward into next year. I hope you all have a cheerful and memorable holiday season. I look forward to seeing you at the nursery!

Your local horticulturalist,

Steven

December Gardening Tips

December marks the beginning of our true winter here in Southern California. The days grow cooler and shorter, shadows are longer and plant growth comes to a near halt until sometime in February. Normally, December fulfills its winter role with cold and rain, although it can sometimes bring a Santa Ana not unlike the one we had recently that makes you swear that August has returned! So, whenever the weather brings hot drying winds be prepared to hand-water your plants.

If you are too busy to give your garden much attention this month, you're in luck as most plants will do quite well with little help from you. If you prepared for winter in the fall, sit back, relax, and enjoy the holidays. If you still haven't finished your fall gardening tasks, don't worry...the fall planting window hasn't quite closed just yet.

If you can find the time, working in the garden this month is wonderful. The weather is cooler and when the soil dries a little following a hypothetical rain shower, it's perfect for digging. However, be careful not to go to work too quickly after a rain because working a wet soil can physically harm it. Grab a fistful and squeeze it lightly: if it crumbles when you loosen your grip it's just right; if it stays in a tight ball it's still too wet.
