Umbereen (aka UM) has been with ROCCREW since 2010, although her rowing experience takes her all the way back to the rivers in Pittsburgh. (Be sure to ask her about her near-encounter with a barge!) She began as one of our sub rowers, then a committee member and now a proud representative on our Board of Directors. Her favorite part about rowing is the combination of an amazing workout with great company and fantastic scenery, even in the rain. There is nothing more powerful to her than the connection she feels when everyone hits their stride TOGETHER and the boat flies seemingly effortlessly. To her that is the epitome of selflessness, and true teamwork.
When Um rows, she often thinks of her mom. It is because of her mom’s cancer journey that Um is one of our crew’s biggest supporters. Together with her three beautiful children Siraj, Jinan, and Shayan, she is grateful for the many moments they have shared supporting cancer causes and ROCCREW events specifically.
When off the water Um works as a financial planner, a move into this industry that she is loving since 2024. She also loves horses, paddle boarding, yoga, and reading. She hopes to finish her coaching certification soon and we are all looking forward to that! We are also very lucky to have Um serve as chair for the Board of Directors for the Breast Cancer Coalition of Rochester.
Um’s advice for people who are interested in starting to row? “Just try! And have patience. With the ever-changing elements of wind and water, you are not in control of anything but your effort. Be patient. It could grow to be something you love as much as I do!”
