Welcome to the DECEMBER 2025 edition of our newsletter. Read on for some great information about our crew and upcoming events!!!

Leaving cancer behind one stroke at a time!

Our Mission: ROCCREW is committed to serving the physical and emotional needs of all cancer survivors. Through our shared rowing experience, we find a means to maintain wellness for our bodies, and courage and determination for our spirit.

We find healing on the water through the power of our commitment, and we hope to provide inspiration to all of those who face the challenges of cancer.

We are supporting people who have faced cancer or are currently under treatment by providing physical conditioning, rehabilitation, education, and camaraderie.

Come row with us!!!

Everyone is welcome to row with us! We are a crew of cancer survivors and supporters dedicated to fueling our bodies and spirits while sharing a rowing experience. Our three boats are housed at the Genesee Waterways Center (GWC) at 149 Elmwood Avenue.

There is much to be said for the relationships you make with your Learn to Row class, and the camaraderie you share with all of our fellow survivors and supporters once you join the crew.

After four sessions in the tanks at Pittsford Indoor Rowing Center, you will be ready to join us for our winter workout program if you choose, and be comfortable and ready to join the crew on the water for the regular season in the spring! During the regular season (May - October) rowers can choose to row one day a week, twice, or if ready to start preparing for regattas, up to three times each week.

Our next Learn to Row session will be held on the following dates: January 6, 8, 13, and 15th from 5:45-7:00 p.m. at the Pittsford Indoor Rowing Center. The cost is $80. Please click on the link below to to register!

Cost should never be a barrier to rowing with ROCCREW. If needed please apply for a ROCCREW grant through our website at ROCCREW.com

We welcome home a successful crew from the Head of the Charles in Boston, Massachusetts! Congratulations ladies on a great regatta and all of the memories you made there! Our crew joined 114 other cancer survivors as part of the Survivor Rowing Network. What a fantastic testament this is to the power rowing brings to recovery and rehabilitation. TRIVIA NIGHT...A HUGE SUCCESS!!!!

While only three teams were recognized as the highest scorers in our ROCCREW Trivia Night, the laughter and fun had by all made everyone a winner! We would like to thank everyone who attended to play, purchased raffle tickets, and joined in the fun to make the evening a huge success for our crew. We look forward to seeing everyone again next year so start paying attention to all the trivia that is around you.

MEET THE CREW!

This month we feature two more of our amazing rowers!

Umbereen (aka UM) has been with ROCCREW since 2010, although her rowing experience takes her all the way back to the rivers in Pittsburgh. (Be sure to ask her about her near-encounter with a barge!) She began as one of our sub rowers, then a committee member and now a proud representative on our Board of Directors. Her favorite part about rowing is the combination of an amazing workout with great company and fantastic scenery, even in the rain. There is nothing more powerful to her than the connection she feels when everyone hits their stride TOGETHER and the boat flies seemingly effortlessly. To her that is the epitome of selflessness, and true teamwork.

When Um rows, she often thinks of her mom. It is because of her mom’s cancer journey that Um is one of our crew’s biggest supporters. Together with her three beautiful children Siraj, Jinan, and Shayan, she is grateful for the many moments they have shared supporting cancer causes and ROCCREW events specifically.

When off the water Um works as a financial planner, a move into this industry that she is loving since 2024. She also loves horses, paddle boarding, yoga, and reading. She hopes to finish her coaching certification soon and we are all looking forward to that! We are also very lucky to have Um serve as chair for the Board of Directors for the Breast Cancer Coalition of Rochester.

Um’s advice for people who are interested in starting to row? “Just try! And have patience. With the ever-changing elements of wind and water, you are not in control of anything but your effort. Be patient. It could grow to be something you love as much as I do!”

While only with ROCCREW for three years now, Carolyn is not a newcomer to rowing! She began rowing with GRC when her daughter was rowing for Brighton because “It looked like fun!” She also presently rows with Adventure Out as well. She stumbled upon our crew while she was in treatment and calls it a “godsend” for helping her deal with her post-treatment PTSD. The camaraderie is her favorite part. (Laughter and friendship is truly the best medicine and our crew has a LOT of both!)

When not on the water, Carolyn enjoys spending time with her wife Carol and her two adult daughters. (She is certainly hoping for some grandchildren soon as well!) She enjoys bicycling, playing pickleball and walking. A return trip to Switzerland would be her ideal vacation as she visited this summer and absolutely LOVED it!

Carolyn’s advice for people who are interested in rowing?  “Try Learn to Row and get some hands-on experience!”
