Oh, what a year it has been!

Happy Holidays from VDH-OMHHE!
The entire Virginia Department of Health - Office of Minority Health and Health Equity (VDH-OMHHE) staff would like to wish you the best this holiday season!  As we prepare to welcome the new year, we would like to take a moment to recap just a few of the big moments our office has had this year.

The Virginia HOI is an online mapping tool that enlivens public data about community health influences.

Data

Members of the Data division have been hard at work all year, having achieved designations for 18 correctional facilities and two counties! They updated more than 8,500 provider records on a designation management database, developed a Critical Access Hospital (CAH) baseline, and spoke at many lectures and other engagements. They also provided valuable inputs to the VDH Community Health Assessment (CHA), and implemented a visualization tool to help bring public health data to life. The Data division used this tool in the second iteration the Health Opportunity Index that we released earlier this month!

Gov. Terry McAuliffe attended the Million Hearts celebration that announced Virginia as the first state in the country to enlist 100 faith-based organizations into the initiative!

Multicultural Health & Community Engagement

The Division of Multicultural Health & Community Engagement began 2015 with a successful health equity training series. It secured a large grant to develop a Youth Health Equity Leadership Initiative (YHELI) program in Danville, Va., maintained Culturally & Linguistically Appropriate Services (CLAS) initiatives and strengthened the office's web presence by using social media. It also hosted an event to celebrate the Virginia's Congregations for Million Hearts initiative!

Operations

The Operations division is the backbone of VDH-OMHHE, and it definitely had a busy year! Along with fiscally managing six federal grants totaling $1.6 million and providing administrative support for the entire office, Operations also helped plan, coordinate and execute our office's successful move from the 10th floor down to the 7th floor.

Heather Anderson, director, Division of Primary Care & Rural Health, presented Linda Kocher, of Mountain Empire Older Citizens (MEOC) Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) in Big Stone Gap, Va., with a certificate for National Rural Health Day.

Primary Care & Rural Health

In addition to preparing multiple grants, the Division of Primary Care and Rural Health continued its work to maintain the Virginia Small Hospital Improvement Program (SHIP) and Medicare Rural Hospital Flexibility (FLEX) program, along with assessing telehealth needs in Virginia. It also hosted its annual Primary Care Office (PCO) stakeholders meeting and Nursing Scholarship advisory committee meeting, and managed more than $450,000 in scholarships and loan repayment funds!
