STUDENT SPOTLIGHT:

HUNTER WILLIAMS

Interview by Jamie Rogers
Where are you from?
I’m from Houston, Texas.

Were you involved in theatre in when you were in high school? Any past theatre experience on stage or behind the scenes?
I’ve been involved in theatre since I was a little one, and I just progressively got more involved throughout high school. I’ve gone from being in costumes to acting, writing, directing, and even doing lights. I can’t say there’s a single part of the theatre that I don’t enjoy.

What were the reasons you decided to enroll at Austin Community College?
I decided to enroll at ACC, because I didn’t really know what I wanted to do or how to go about doing it

Any favorite classes in the Drama Department and why? Important things you have learned so far?
I think the ACC drama department has really helped me understand my career path and how many possibilities there are. In my acting class I was able to experience acting in an unconventional way: nursing simulations. Pretending to be a person with stage two diabetes and an allergy to Benadryl showed me that acting wasn’t just useful onstage or in film. In my voice and diction class, something I recommend for everyone, I was able to understand how vital the voice is, not just in everyday life, but as something that is important to who we are as individuals.

You were cast in our fall 2019 production of Much Ado About Nothing . Can you tell us a bit about the character(s) you played? And what the rehearsal/performance process was like?
In Much Ado About Nothing I had the pleasure to play Borachio and a cyborg version of Claudio. Borachio was a drunk, which I enjoyed a lot. Speaking in Shakespearean language while also trying to maintain the composure of a drunkard was fun and challenging. Claudio was a challenge, since I had obtained the role shortly before the performances, but in the end playing a robot is something I can now check off my bucket list.

Any favorite ACC Drama Production?
My favorite ACC production would have to be Much Ado About Nothing since I’m still new here and don’t have much else to go off of.

Do you attend school and have outside employment? If so, how do you find a balance between work and drama department involvement?
I have a full time job at Central Market, and I’m full time at ACC. It can be really brutal, but I enjoy both of them so the time flies by. My biggest suggestion would be to find a job that you at least somewhat enjoy, that way the days won’t drag out. I was also fortunate enough to have an employer who was very happy to work around my rehearsal schedule, and I probably would have been out of luck without her, so my next suggestion would be to make sure your boss doesn’t suck. The age old story, I know, but it’s true.

Any overall advice to give to current Drama Majors on ways to get them involved in the Department?
I think everyone should come out and audition for shows, because theatre is an excellent stress reliever. You can meet some good people too!

What does the future hold?
In the future I hope to be writing scripts and acting on the stage. I don’t quite know where yet, but I’m certain I’ll always be doing those two things.

Makers and Methods Event: AAS Degree INFO SESSION!
Austin Community College Drama Department is implementing a new degree award that will give our students an exclusive educational opportunity to receive hands-on training with up-to-date theatre technology and practices, while at the same time, continuously supplying the local artistic community with highly competent, professional technicians and designers!

The Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in Theatre Technology  will train enrolled students with professional entry level technical skills across two specializations in technical production which include  Scenery & Lighting and Costumes & Makeup
This program will offer a unique alternative for interested students to not only participate in specialized training curriculum addressing multiple arenas of technical theater, but also allow students the opportunity to apprentice with local theatre companies, thereby creating an avenue for future employment upon degree completion.

The program will begin its official launch in Fall 2020, with select classes being offered in a pre-launch this Spring.

For more information about the degree program or if you are interested in enrolling, please contact Jamie Rogers at jamie.rogers@austincc.edu .

“My undergrad degree was incredibly narrow in scope; while it allowed me the audio engineering background to work in TV broadcast for 8 years, I ended up burned out on audio tech. Cue the realization that I a) want to work in theatre instead of TV and b) do not have the broad -scope theatre background to get a job outside audio. The AAS degree at ACC is going to give me the skills and networking to get theatre tech work (hopefully during) and once I’ve completed the program.”
