Dear Friends,

Ad Astra Per Aspera – To the Stars Through Difficulty . This is of course, the Kansas state motto. As he coined the motto in 1861, John James Ingalls observed, “The aspiration of Kansas is to reach the unattainable; its dream is the realization of the impossible.” Ingalls was reflecting upon the journey of the state’s early settlers and their intrepid pioneering spirit. His words reflected as well on the struggle between anti-slavery and pro-slavery proponents who waged bloody contests – electorally and also on the battlefield.

The words that capture the spirit of those Kansas pioneers also reflect the spirit and commitment of the Kansas Abortion Fund. Like those settlers, we strive in pursuit of seemingly unattainable dreams and do so in the face of the tremendous difficulties that permeate our electoral ‘battlefield.” In Kansas, we fight persistently against TRAP laws (Targeted Regulation of Abortion Providers), anti-feminist resentment, and anti-abortion politicians influenced by far-right zealots. And we provide vital funds for people – many of whom are people of color and immigrants – who either lack the resources to secure an abortion or must choose between that constitutionally-protected healthcare procedure and their rent (or other necessities) because insurance and Medicaid rarely pay for abortion.

Bottom line:  The stories we hear are heart-breaking. The least we can do is to support and assist someone who seeks only to make their own medical decisions and to practice their LAWFUL RIGHT to have an abortion.

You all have been so generous. Please, if you’re able, remember our state motto, and help us reach the stars.
