And so ends one of the most unusual and challenging years on record. We hope you and yours have been able to find some small silver linings of more time alone, and less distractions from being out in the world. We also appreciate that many of you have been ill or care-giving others, have suffered losses of all kinds, and that there is a real toll of ongoing social isolation, economic worry and public health uncertainty.

Thankfully, family and friends have not been cancelled, neither have a host of other areas like art, music, food, movies, nature, and lots more. We're sending love and light this time of year as we look forward to a better 2021 for all!

With best wishes for good health and ease in the new year.

Thinking about Weigh Loss for the New Year?
Read Dr. Rothenberg's
Why Can’t I Lose Weight? The Role of Obesogens in Our Obesity Epidemic

After 35 years of practice as a licensed naturopathic doctor, I can tell you that some people just cannot lose weight. They may have come to it genetically, they may have yo-yo dieted for decades, but the truth remains, they weigh more than they want to and the extra pounds impact many other elements of health and well-being, both physical and psychological.

We used to think it was a mathematical type equation where eating less, plus exercising more, equaled gradual and permanent weight loss. While what you eat and how you move are certainly relevant, scientific understanding of fat metabolism, the physiology of satiety, and the broad effect of a wide range of environmental chemicals on hormones evolves, so too does our understanding and appreciation of many other important, ubiquitous factors at play.

Our 2021 Calendar:

What about this amazing photo by our dear friend, Lynn Bowmaster!? When I saw this picture, I immediately knew I'd love to feature it for our 2021 annual calendar. When not snapping the occasional photo, Lynn runs the wonderful Woven Word Young Writers Workshop.

We enjoy making & sharing these, so if you'd like a hard copy of the calendar printed at your local copy store, feel free to print up a few & share with friends. And hopefully, when we have the chance to meet in person again, in our clinic or in a NESH class, we'll have some to share.
RECIPE: Roasted Squash Seeds
This year before the last harvest was in, I was taken by surprise by a group of delicata squash lounging about on the edge of my small backyard garden. The trail of green tendrils last spring meandered away from seedlings I planted in early summer, followed by the bugle shaped, bright-eyed yellow flowers hiding under exuberant leaves, giving way to the lilliputian squash that did what they knew how to do. In the long warm days of deep summer, they grew to 8 or 9 inches long and by the end of fall were ready to be picked.

I’d like to focus on here are the squash seeds. They’re flavorful and nutritious, full of all kinds of nutrients like omega 3 fatty acids, protein, beta carotene and Vitamin C. Click here for the full recipe
RECOMMENDED: Where we bring to light an organization, business, or product we believe in.

We'd like to recommend the mindfulness app, CALM. Their tagline says it all:

Find Your Calm: Sleep More, Stress Less, Live Better

I am especially fond of CALM's 10 Minute Daily Calm, which you can do on your own or with a friend or parent or child. Most of us can find 10 minutes! I try to do each morning before I start my day. Check it out and see what you think. Staying in the moment, raising our threshold for feeling stress, helps to decrease the negative impact of stress on the body, mind and spirit.
