POINTSETTIAS - KEEPER OR COMPOST

Poinsettias remain one of the most popular holiday flowers. One of the most common questions after Christmas is "How can I care for my poinsettia so that it will bloom again next Christmas?" While this can be done, it's a very fussy, exacting process. Since the plants are not that expensive, you might just choose to compost your poinsettias. For those of you who are undaunted, the process for saving your poinsettia and getting it to re-bloom begins with the care you give it the first season.

CARING FOR YOUR POINSETTIA DURING ITS FIRST HOLIDAY SEASON

Light - Place near a sunny window. South, east, or west facing windows are best.

Heat - Maintain a temperature of 65-75 degrees during the day and 60 degrees at night. Cold drafts or allowing the plant to touch a cold surface can cause leaf drop.

Water - Water when soil surface is dry to the touch. Water until it drains out the bottom, but don't let the plant sit in water.

WINTER WATERING IS A MUST

Watering systems should be turned off, so on any nice day use a hose or watering can to give your plants a drink. This is especially important for new plantings. A snow fall or light rain will NOT be enough to get your plants through the winter.

CREATE A NEW HOLIDAY TRADITION

The Christmas pickle is a German-American Christmas tradition. A glass pickle ornament is hidden within the branches of a Christmas tree. Then, the first child to find the pickle on Christmas morning gets a special treat, or they get to open the first gift.

DON'T FORGET THE "CHRISTMAS ROSE"

HELLEBORES

Hellebores have been a traditional holiday hostess gift in Europe for many years. These outstanding perennials bring new life to winter and early spring. The pink-white blossoms are a great contrast with the dark green foliage. A great Christmas houseplant that can be planted in your perennial garden next spring! This hardy perennial thrives in our climate and is also deer-resistant. Great for shady gardens in Central Oregon.

CHRISTMAS CACTUS CARE

A very popular houseplant, and for good reason! When they bloom, they produce colorful, tubular flowers in a wide selection of colors. Beautiful flowers, long bloom time, and easy care requirements make them a wonderful plant. Maximize your holiday blooms with a few helpful tips:

Maintain an optimal climate of 65 degrees.

Keep the soil evenly moist while your plant is blooming, misting frequently is encouraged.

Use a quality soil rich in humus and other nutrients.

Place the cactus in an east-facing window for moderate light and some direct sun.

Apply a high concentrated plant food that promotes blooming. We recommend Fertilome Blooming and Rooting (9-58-8) every two weeks once buds form.

Repot your cactus each year after flowering.
