Happy Hounds News
April 2015

It's finally starting to feel like Spring!! After this long winter, the dogs are enjoying their outside time. With school coming to an end, the daily pool parties are soon to follow. We're all beyond excited for some much needed play time in the water. Warmer weather, here we come!

This last month has been full of activities! As of March 2015, all of the staff has been trained and certified in pet first aid and CPR. We enjoyed learning about the signs and treatment of common dog related medical concerns and emergencies. Happy Hounds promises to use this knowledge to better care for your pup if the need should ever arise.

We're also thrilled to announce our Training Classes with Valerie from Ann Arbor Canine Coach. Valerie uses positive reinforcement techniques to help curb undesirable behaviors. Not only will you have a well mannered pup by the end of the  6 sessions but your bond will be stronger! We still have a few openings for the class that begins April 7th. Visit our Training Page for more information.

Sincerely,

Christine Perez

Dogs of the Month

Kody & Jackson

Meet Kody & Jackson, both are labradoodles. Kody joined the Happy Hounds family in January 2008 at the age of one. What a handsome man he is! Kody is a giant lover. If he's not lounging outside in the sun, Kody enjoys following the staff members around while lightly holding their hand in his mouth. Soon after Kody joined our pack, his family adopted him a brother, Jackson.  Jackson joined the Happy Hounds family in January 2010 at the age of one. Jackson came from a rough past but meeting this gentle soul, you would never know. Kody & Jackson are attached at the hip. They are often found snuggled up together or playing with their choice dog of the day. They are the perfect pair!

Luke

Meet Luke, a yellow lab. Luke joined the Happy Hounds family in January 2009 at the age of 5 years. This big boy is the epitome of gentle giant, there isn't one grumpy bone in his body. Luke is extremely patient and loving, he's one of the first to make friends with the new puppies entering the pack. He's our big papa bear! When he's not busy being the ambassador of Happy Hounds, he's found chasing around his favorite lady Lexi or begging for rub downs. After a few long hours on the job,  Luke enjoys a nice nap on a cot with a friend. All that work is exhausting!

Buddy

Meet Buddy, a cockapoo. Buddy joined the Happy Hounds family in March 2010 at the age of 10 months. There's nothing Buddy loves more than coming in and greeting all his friends. Once he's made his rounds, he finds his favorite snuggle buddy, Charlie, and plops on the cot next to him. Don't let his mild nature fool you, Buddy is also one of our helpful referees. If someone is getting too excited, he's one of the first to tell them to settle down.

Pet First Aid
April is
National Pet First Aid Awareness
month!

Accidents can happen at any time, it's best to be prepared so a serious crisis can be averted. If you don't have one already, perhaps it's time  to consider purchasing or assembling a first aid kit for your beloved furry family member.

Some basic doggy first aid supplies are:
  • Absorbent gauze pads
  • Adhesive tape
  • Antiseptic wipes, lotion, powder or spray
  • Gauze rolls
  • Sterile non-stick gauze pads for bandages
  • Cotton balls or swabs
  • Hydrogen peroxide (to induce vomiting-do this only when directed by a veterinarian or a poison-control expert)
  • Ice pack
  • Non-latex disposable gloves
  • Petroleum jelly
  • Rectal thermometer (your pet's temperature should not rise above 103?F or fall below 100?F)
  • Scissors (with blunt ends)
  • Sterile saline solution
  • Tweezers
  • Leash
  • Muzzle

For more tips on doggy first aid kits, visit: Human Society of the United States

As of March 2015, all of the Happy Hounds staff has been certified for pet first aid and CPR! A huge thank you to R.E.A.L. Pet First Aid Training in Canton for training and certifying the staff.
Training Class List
We are excited to announce our Spring Training class schedule with Valerie of Ann Arbor Canine CoachValerie offers small class sizes which helps with socialization and to teach pups to stay focused in times of distraction. This also allows for more individual attention than larger class sizes. Her methods of training are based off of positive reinforcement and clicker training. The classes we're offering are Well Mannered Dog and Dependable Dog.

Well Mannered Dog  is a beginning obedience class for dogs 5 months and older. This class will focus basic commands such as: sit, down, stay, come, focus, etc. Your pup will also work on how to properly walk on leash.
NOTE: The first night of training is orientation; please do not bring your dog, Well Mannered Dog only.

Dependable dog is an advanced obedience class for dogs 5 months and older who have previously completed a beginning obedience course. In this class, your pup will be tested in "real world" situations to better reinforce basic commands.

Friendly Reminders

When boarding your dog with us, we MUST have your dogs updated vaccination records 48 hours BEFORE he/she begin boarding.  If you are traveling abroad, we also will need a local contact in case of emergency.

Your dog MUST have a snap "quick release" collar for day care and boarding, with no tags attached. You can keep the snap collar in your Happy Hounds backpack.  If this is not his/her daily collar we will change it out when your dogs arrive at Happy Hounds.  This is important for your dogs safety.
