Happy Hounds News
August 2015

This month in August, Happy Hounds will continue its Summer celebration with TWO parties! We will be celebrating everyone's favorite holiday, National Dog Day, on Wednesday, August 26th. The monthly birthday celebration with be held Monday, August 17th. Be sure to reserve a spot if you'd like to bring your pooch for the festivities! With truly the 'Dog Days of Summer' here, we will have fun with pool parties, sunbathing, ball play and lounging. Some pups do not like the weather in August, please let our staff know at drop-off and if a storm brews, we can give your baby the extra special love, attention and comfort they need.

Happy Hounds is proud to announce a new working relationship for your pup's grooming with Britt's Bow Wow Boutique and Spa located at 550 Forest Ave, Downtown Plymouth (next door to Three Dog Bakery). As always, your pup can go home fluffy and fresh after a sleepover or a fun-filled day of daycare. Just ask Happy Hounds to make an appointment for your favorite
furchild. If boarding, please make your appointment as soon as possible to ensure a groom prior to departure.

We are also happy to announce our first training class here at Happy Hounds with Animal Learning Systems to start Tuesday, August 11th at 6:45pm. Not only does this benefit your family and pooches at home, but gives your pup awesome manners at school with their buddies. If you know someone that is not a client of Happy Hounds or even if your pup attends Happy Hounds, Animal Learning system can enroll your family today.

Enjoy the last full month of Summer!

Sincerely,

Christine Perez

Dogs of the Month

Cruiser

Meet Cruiser, a lab mix! Cruiser joined the Happy Hounds family in April 2009 at the age of 4. He has the best old man face in town!! Cruiser is a very friendly, happy guy who loves nothing more than relaxing in the sun and keeping the excitement level to the minimum. When all the pups are having too much fun, he's one of the first to put his foot down and tell them to settle down. Unfortunately, no one takes him seriously. Maybe next time Cruiser, maybe next time.

Yukon

Meet Yukon, a Samoyed! Yukon joined the Happy Hounds family in July 2008 at the age of 6 months. What a big poof ball! Yukon's looks match his personality. He's all about having too much fun and being way too happy. Yukon never has a bad day.. or hair day!! This handsome man is always wrestling and making new friends.

Monterey

Meet Monterey, a Lhasa Apso! Monterey joined the Happy Hounds family in July 2008 at the age of 3. Monterey is a pretty low key pooch. He's often found curled up on the biggest, fluffiest bed which he has claimed for him and only him. Being such a little guy with such big authority is hard. After Monterey stakes his claim, he feels as though he MUST protect it from any and everyone. More often than not, he's protecting it from dogs who are just casually walking by, barely noticing him. But hey, it works!

Lola

Meet Lola, a Basset Hound! Lola joined the Happy Hounds family in February 2010 at the age of 10 months. What a sweet lady! Even though Lola is clearly a Basset Hound, she has a little bit of breed confusion. Lola prefers to surround herself with anyone Beagle. Her best friends are Paulie and Tucker, two beagle mixes. She has basically invited herself into their sibling-hood but they don't mind! They're the Three Musketeers! Always snuggled up or wrestling together.

Early K9 Cancer Signs

Cancer in dogs has become especially prevalent in aging pooches. As a matter of fact, 50% of dogs over the age of 10 years have developed cancer at some point in their lifetime. New estimates show cancer as the ultimate cause of death in one in five dogs. Of course, the key is to be alert when it comes to spotting the symptoms early and then treating them very quickly so that the severity of the disease can be avoided. Regular annual veterinary exams and bloodwork are an excellent way to catch cancers early. In many cases, by the time symptoms are obvious, the cancer is difficult to treat. But, certain cancers can be detected early through blood tests.

Most Common Symptoms

1. Abnormal swelling/s that continue to grow
2. Sores that never heal
3. Loss of appetite
4. Weight loss
5. Bleeding or discharge from any opening in the body
6. Offensive odor
7. Difficulty eating or swallowing
8. Loss of stamina or hesitation to exercise
9. Persistent stiffness or lameness
10. Difficulty breathing, urinating, and defecating

Friendly Reminders

When boarding your dog with us, we MUST have your dogs updated vaccination records 48 hours BEFORE he/she begin boarding.  If you are traveling abroad, we also will need a local contact in case of emergency.

Your dog MUST have a snap "quick release" collar for day care and boarding, with no tags attached. You can keep the snap collar in your Happy Hounds backpack.  If this is not his/her daily collar we will change it out when your dogs arrive at Happy Hounds.  This is important for your dogs safety.

Be sure to inform us of any changes in contact information; phone numbers, email/home address, emergency contact, etc.
