Greetings!
As we celebrate July 4th in Mexico, the Bahamas or right here in Port Washington, let us take a moment (summer cocktails and all) to reflect on the meaning of true independence that the Founding Fathers were seeking when they came to these free shores, independence from religious persecution and the freedom to practice their religion freely.
The American ideals of freedom of religion and freedom of speech were revolutionary when they were first introduced into a world where tyranny and oppression were the norm.
Let's remember their sacrifices and take advantage of this freedom! Let's be proud of who we are, let's walk down the streets as proud Jews and practice one more mitzvah. Hey, it's the American way!
Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Shalom M Paltiel

Public Displays of Affection?
By: Rabbi Aron Moss | Sydney, Australia
Question: I have an issue with religious Jews. They have this thing about not showing affection in public. You would never see a very religious couple holding hands walking down the street and certainly not kissing in public, as it is considered immodest. But I think this teaches children that affection is bad and romance is taboo. How will they ever get married if they don't see affectionate parents?

Who Owns Truth
A sharp mind will find a truth for itself.
A humble spirit will find a truth higher than itself.
Truth is not the property of intellectuals, but of those who know how to escape their own selves.

The Danger of Suspicion
Had they learned nothing from the sin of the spies who, by de-motivating others through their behavior, condemned an entire generation to forty years of wandering in the desert?

A Rose Among the Thorns
Another violent blow landed on my other cheek. "You are still praying?" the Blockelteste asked. Her face was crimson, contorted from fury, her eyes bloodshot. A sudden Jewish pride arose within me, like a pillar of smoke rising from a chimney . . .

Parshat Matot-Massei
Moses conveys the laws governing the annulment of vows to the heads of the tribes of Israel. War is waged against Midian for their role in plotting the moral destruction of Israel, and the Torah gives a detailed account of the war spoils and how they were allocated amongst the people, the warriors, the Levites and the high priest.
The tribes of Reuben and Gad (later joined by half of the tribe of Manasseh) ask for the lands east of the Jordan as their portion in the Promised Land, these being prime pastureland for their cattle. Moses is initially angered by the request, but subsequently agrees on the condition that they first join, and lead, in Israel's conquest of the lands west of the Jordan.
The forty-two journeys and encampments of Israel are listed, from the Exodus to their encampment on the plains of Moab across the river from the land of Canaan. The boundaries of the Promised Land are given, and cities of refuge are designated as havens and places of exile for inadvertent murderers. The daughters of Tzelafchad marry within their own tribe of Manasseh, so that the estate which they inherit from their father should not pass to the province of another tribe. |
