AMERICA'S BIRTHDAY
CELEBRATING CREATION OF THE UNITED STATES
Tifton kicked off its Independence Day celebration early with fireworks lighting the skies Monday night, July 3, to rave reviews from the audience.
Of course today, July 4, is actually Independence Day, commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, which formally separated America's 13 colonies from England and its king.
However, a case can be made that July 2 is the real "Independence Day," for on that day in 1776, the Continental Congress approved a motion by Virginia's Richard Henry Lee to separate from the motherland and proclaim America as independent. In fact, founding father John Adams believed July 2 would become the "great anniversary festival" of America's birthday.
On July 3, Adams wrote to his wife Abigail: "
The Second Day of July 1776, will be the most memorable Epocha in the History of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated, by succeeding generations as the great anniversary Festival. It ought to be commemorated as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews (sic), Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more."
But it was on July 4 when the
Continental
Congress actually adopted the written Declaration primarily penned by Thomas
Jefferson. Thus, July 4 became the nation's birthday.
