Independence Day has arrived, and the weather remains hot and partly cloudy, but should be relatively dry. While some local towns have already held their "July 4th" festivities earlier this weekend, area fireworks can still be found today for those willing to drive a little.
The biggest Tiftarea celebration today is in the Berrien County town of Enigma, about a 15-minute drive from Downtown Tifton on U.S. Highway 82 East. Gates open at 11 a.m. today, July 4, at Enigma City Park.
The popular, day-long Independence Day celebration in Enigma includes vendors, activities, food, live music, and fireworks after dark. At 3 p.m., the Naturally Southern band will perform, followed by Ten Mile Bay beginning at 7 p.m.
The City of Fitzgerald in Ben Hill County has its celebration beginning at 6 p.m. today at Paulk Park with watermelon, hot dogs, music by Southern Confessional, and fireworks starting at 9:15 p.m.
A little further down the road, Valdosta begins its fireworks show at approximately 9:15 p.m. Sponsored by the Valdosta-Lowndes County Parks and Recreation Authority, the fireworks are best viewed from the Valdosta Mall side of Interstate 75 between exits 16 and 18.
Also in the Valdosta area, the Wild Adventures Theme Park "Celebrate America Festival" continues with free admission to active and retired military personnel. The park will have fireworks beginning at dark.
Over in Albany, the Independence Day Celebration begins at 5 p.m. at the Veterans Park Amphitheatre. DJ Planet X hosts with musical performances from Dirt Road Sports, Essence Band, and Unbreakable Bloodline. Fireworks follow at 9:30 p.m.

Tifton Police have arrested three teens, one of them a 14-year-old juvenile, on charges relating to entering parked cars.
Asher R. Pitts, 17, and Tristen C. Burton, 19, both of Ocilla, and the 14-year-old from Tifton are all charged with three counts of entering an auto and one count of loitering and prowling, police said.
Tifton Police had responded to an auto alarm going off at 3:37 a.m. Thursday outside Wildwood Apartments on Sussex Drive. As police approached, three males in dark clothing began running into a wooded area between Madison Avenue and Sussex Drive, police said.
| |
Backup units were called, and Tifton Police and Tift County Sheriff's deputies set up a perimeter and located the three males. One of them was found crawling face down through the woods, and the other two were apprehended nearby on Newton Drive.
The suspects were dressed in all-black clothing and wearing face masks in an attempt to hide their identities, police said.
In addition to one vehicle found to be entered at Wildwood Apartments, police said two other vehicles in the 1400 block of Madison Avenue appeared to have been broken into and rummaged through.
The 17- and 19-year-old suspects were taken to Tifton County Jail. Police contacted the Department of Juvenile Justice regarding the 14 year old, who was then turned over to his parents at the Tifton Police Department; authorities said an ankle monitor was being placed on him.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Tifton Police Detective Lt. Chris Luckey at 229-382-3132, or to submit an anonymous tip using the Tifton PD Tip411 app, texting TIFTONPD and the tip to 847411; or may visit www.tifton.net, click tip411, and complete the online form.

The Great Race – the time, speed, endurance rally for classic cars and trucks that made a stop in Tifton – ended Sunday in Colorado after 2,300 miles.
The father-son team of Howard and Doug Sharp in their 1916 Hudson (seen at right) was the Grand Champion.
This was the fourth time the Sharps of Fairport, N.Y., have won the Great Race. They were also Grand Champions in 2019, 2015, and 2011.
They won $50,000, a large eagle trophy, and bragging rights until next summer's race, which will be from Kentucky to Maine.
This year's nine-day Great Race began in St. Augustine, Fla., stopping for the night in Tifton on June 24 and parking the approximately 120 vehicles downtown for locals to view. The race ended Sunday in Colorado Springs.
Participant race vehicles cannot be newer than 1974, and most of them were much older. During the hot, grueling trip across country last week, a couple of cars didn't make it, and there were several breakdowns.
