"That a new civilization had come, a new spirit had arisen on this side of the Atlantic more advanced and more developed in its regard for the rights of the individual than that which characterized the Old World.

Life in a new and open country had aspirations which could not be realized in any subordinate position."

That description of the founding of the United States so beautifully summarizes why we stop to celebrate Independence Day as a nation. Even 248 years later, the desire of humans to be free drives us all to seek to preserve and protect the enumerated rights of individuals, granted to our citizens by our Constitution.

As you gather to celebrate independence with family, friends, and neighbors, be mindful of the courage and sacrifice it took for the Founding Fathers to break free from the tyranny of the "Old World."

And, as always, be grateful for the men and women of our armed forces, that keep us free.

My family and I wish you and yours a safe and Happy Independence Day!
