"When I grow up..."
This year's International Day for Biological Diversity , commemorated May 22nd, is themed "Our solutions are in nature" .

The Global Wildlife Program (GWP) asked the kindergarten class of biodiverse species what they wanted to be when they grow up. Their answers aren’t that different from the role they'll play in the ecosystem as adults!

  • Elephants are landscapers – they uproot trees and create gaps in the vegetation that allow new trees to grow.
  • Beavers are ecosystem engineers – they help build dams and wetlands.
  • Toucans are foresters – they help restore forests by dispersing seeds over long distances.
  • Sea Turtles are architects – they help build coral reefs by removing algae and sea sponges.
  • Bees are farmers – without them pollinating crops, we would have no food!
