Successful career fair in Peguis

A career fair in Peguis drew crowds last week with attendance from more than 100 students plus adults from the community.

Interlake-Eastern RHA attended the event with representation from acute care, primary care, emergency response services, medical services, support services, communications, long-term care and Indigenous health.

In partnership with a provincial working group, Interlake-Eastern RHA is hosting Health-care Career Expos in communities starting this April. The first one will take place on April 19 in Lac du Bonnet. Click here to learn more and keep up to date on all of the career fairs taking place.

If you hear of a career fair taking place in a community near you — or if you're interested in participating in a career fair to promote your profession — please contact us at [email protected].

Thank you to Kathryn Lapenskie, community relations coordinator, and Ian Magnan, project manager, Indigenous recruitment partnerships, for providing the photos and great information!

Getting to know our team!

Primary care nurses are important members of our teams of health-care professionals.

Four primary care nurses work in the Interlake-Eastern region, sharing their skills in St. Laurent, Fisher Branch, Winnipeg Beach and Pine Falls.

Eva Gulay started her role as primary care nurse in September at the Fisher Branch Primary Care Centre. She supports physicians at Ongomiizwin Health Services, an inter-professional health service agency led by a team of Indigenous and non-Indigenous health professionals, while also providing patients with care.

“As a primary care nurse, I provide care to individuals in Fisher Branch and the surrounding area with the goal of achieving the best health outcome for patients and families,” Eva explains.

“In my role as a primary care nurse, I strive to provide health-promoting care that is culturally competent and respectful of diversity. Clients can make appointments directly with myself or I can also receive referrals from the physicians at our clinic.”

Eva provides a variety of services such as wound care, dressing changes, suture or staple removal, injections, immunizations and ear flushes. Other services include wart treatment, weight and blood pressure checks, urine tests, blood glucose checks, pregnancy tests, and ear and throat assessments.

In addition, primary care nurses offer assessments and screening, while also supporting healthy lifestyles. At the same time, they focus on education and chronic disease management in an effort to improve health outcomes and provide services for patients closer to home.

“Throughout my career, I have worked in both rural and urban health centres and now community health,” Eva says.

“When I started nursing over 10 years ago, I didn’t anticipate where this profession would take me. The role of a nurse doesn’t need to be one particular mould but can continuously change and grow.”

We’re nearing the end of the Safe WORK audit.

This week, auditors Jacques St. Hilaire, Michelle Gawronski and Quim Reis will wrap up with visits and interviews in East Gate Lodge, as well as facilities in Oakbank.

Click here to see details related to the audit.

Thank you to everyone who welcomed the auditors and shared their safety knowledge!

Congrats to our contest winner!

Last week, we asked Wave readers to name the 2 co-chairs on their Workplace Safety & Health Committee, to give the title of an IERHA safety policy posted on the bulletin board, and to give the name of the person who signed the commitment statement posted on the bulletin board.

The contest winner is Susan Beddall, a health-care aide at Kin Place Personal Care Home. A prize will be sent via inter-office courier.

Congrats! And thanks for your participation!

TikTok directive for devices accessing

corporate information

Due to the potential security and privacy risks associated with the use of TikTok on mobile devices, Digital Shared Services is issuing a directive to remove TikTok from all devices used to access, transmit and store any corporate information by today (March 8).

CBC reports that TiKTok is owned by a China-based company called ByteDance,

Like other platforms, including Facebook and YouTube, TikTok monitors what content you engage with and for how long. TikTok also monitors how you use your device and how it functions, including typing, battery state, audio settings and if you’re connected audio devices. It's also able to identify the objects and scenery that appear in your videos, the existence and location within an image of face and body features … and the text of the words spoken. Also of concern is TikTok can collect "precise" GPS location data from users.

Digital Shared Services is advising the protection of the information on our networks is a top priority. This precautionary step is being taken to safeguard the personal health information of people interacting with the health-care system across Manitoba.

Please do your part by deleting the TikTok app from any corporate issued devices or personal devices used to access corporate content. Read more.

Applications open for Camp Stepping Stones

The name "Stepping Stones’ derives from the analogy that grief is little steps on smooth and jagged stones, one step at a time to get through grief on our journey.

If you know a child who would benefit from attending Camp Stepping Stones, please have the parent or guardian complete an application and submit by May 1.

This year’s grief camp will be held from June 2 to 4.

Click here for the application form and additional information. Click here to see a poster.

Volunteers are also needed, especially male cabin leaders, which require a full weekend commitment.

If you are still on the fence and don’t have a whole weekend to commit, why not get your toes wet and be an activity volunteer or an extra?

Please contact Barb Ramsay at [email protected] or 1-855-494-7369 as soon as possible for more information on these fun and memorable volunteer opportunities

Changes to Manitoba Health cards

Manitoba Health advises the six-digit family registration number used on health cards will be changing to include one letter and five numbers going forward.

Previously, the family number would be six numbers (e.g. 123456) but now one letter will be included (e.g. A12345). There will be no changes to nine-digit individual numbers.

Using a mix of numbers and letters for new family registration numbers will ensure enough options are available for Manitoba’s growing population.

March is Nutrition Month!

March is Nutrition Month, and Alisyn Makowski, a registered dietitian at Pine Falls Primary Care Centre, shared this tasty recipe for Banana-berry Muffins.

"This is my go-to muffin recipe," Alisyn said. "I usually switch up the berries or fruit I use based on what I have on hand or in the freezer, but my favourite is saskatoons."

Banana-berry Muffins

Makes 12 muffins

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup quick or large flake rolled oats
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup whole wheat flour
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup ground flaxseed
  • 1 ½ tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1½ cups mashed ripe bananas (3-4)
  • ¼ cup canola oil
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup fresh or frozen berries (can use blueberries, saskatoons, raspberries)

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Spray a 12-cup muffin tin with cooking spray or line with muffin baking cups and set aside.
  2. Combine oats, both flours, sugar, ground flaxseed, baking powder, baking soda and salt in a large bowl. Mix well and set aside.
  3. In a medium bowl, whisk together mashed bananas, oil and egg.
  4. Add banana mixture to dry ingredients and stir just until dry ingredients are moistened.
  5. Gently fold in berries.
  6. Divide batter into 12 muffin cups and bake for 20 minutes, or until a wooden tooth pick inserted in centre of the muffin comes out clean.
  7. Cool on wire rack then enjoy!

It's National Social Work Month and this year's theme is "Social Work is Essential."
