🎣☀️ Happy July! Summertime & the Livin' Is Easy! ☀️🎣

Hi Everyone!

Summer is in full swing here in Maine and the Center is bubbling with excitement as we continue to open up, offering face-to-face and hybrid events and services as we continue to follow the most recent CDC mask recommendations.

In June we started face-to-face services and programs, including Therapeutic Massage sessions with Faith Perkins, Reflexology with June Atherton and our first hybrid meeting, Mindfulness: Tools for Well Being with Jen Harry. Earlier this month we held our first hybrid group with the Safe Harbor Cancer Support Group.

The 21st Annual Beth C. Wright Walk For Life is now open for registration! The Walk will take place on Saturday, August 28, 2021 at the Addison Town Hall and Tuscan Lodge in Addison. Free registration is now open and we encourage you to sign up or donate today.

We welcome back Walking Your Way to Mindfulness with Jen Harry which will take place every third Friday of the month and Open Arms Breast Cancer Support Group in person on the 1st Sunday of the month. We also have some other interesting programs coming up, including a hybrid session called "Re-emerging from the Pandemic with Intention with Jen Harry." DTD

As always, remember that we are here for you. We encourage you to reach out if you'd like information about our programs and services, or just to connect and say hello! Sun Protection and Skin Cancer Prevention

It’s summertime in Maine and everyone is spending more time outdoors. Whether going to the mountains, seashore or staying in their own backyard, people seek out fun physical activities, the serenity of nature and now, added social time with family and friends that they have not seen during this past year. While spending time in the sun on a beautiful day don’t forget to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays that can cause skin cancer. Maine has one of the highest skin cancer rates in the country according to the CDC. Here is a list of tips to help yourself and your family stay safe.

  1. Seek Shade – under an umbrella, a tree or other shelter, avoid outdoor activities between 11 am and 3 pm.
  2. Clothing – wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants whenever possible.
  3. Hat – wear a hat with a wide brim all the way around that shades face, ears, and back of the neck.
  4. Sunglasses – wear sunglasses that block UVA and UVB rays and are a wrap-around style to the best protection. This also reduces the risk of cataracts.
  5. Sunscreen – apply a thick layer of SPF 15 or higher on all exposed skin.
  6. Avoid Indoor Tanning (any time of year) – using a tanning bed exposes users to high levels of UV rays and does not protect against sunburn.

17th Annual Beth C.Wright Ride For Life
Saturday, September 11, 2021
Surry, Maine
In the past year, while the world has been concentrating on fighting a pandemic, many have also been fighting their own personal battles with cancer. Cancer did not shut down. Neither did the Beth Wright Center. We quickly adapted our services to reach out to assist cancer patients.

Support groups, programs exploring nutrition, meditation, relaxation, yoga, journaling are just a few of the services that are being virtually shared at no cost to cancer patients and their families. Our staff has been available by phone to assist those in need of resources throughout this pandemic. We have offered assistance to those trying to navigate the vaccine process.

Raising funds to support this work has not been easy this year. On Sat Sept. 11th we will be hosting our 17th Beth C. Wright Ride for Life on the scenic Blue Hill Peninsula. Please join us in this effort to keep all our work moving forward! Check out some of the details for this year's Ride.

Highlights for this year:
  • Our goal to have 100 riders and raise $25,000.
  • We are now allowing e-bikes for the 20-mile ride.
  • We are asking participants to raise a minimum of $150.
  • Complimentary Boxed lunches provided by Brooklin Inn

We will keep you up to date as things develop.
Revisit National Cancer Survivor Day 2021

This spring, the Beth C. Wright Cancer Resource Center partnered with the Christine B. Foundation, the Cancer Support Center of Western Maine and the Dempsey Center to host an online event to recognize National Cancer Survivor Day in Maine.

A three-day series of speakers and educational programs was created to celebrate the lives of cancer survivors. If you missed this special event it’s not too late to watch the recorded videos. Go to: https://ncsd-maine.com/. These videos will be available for viewing for months to come.

By clicking on the daily tabs at the top of the webpage, you will have access to each day’s virtual programs including:
  •  Conversations in the Kitchen – Discover a new healthy recipe while listening to some of Maine’s leading oncologists.
  • Survivorship Education Series – Learn about different aspects of survivorship from professionals around the state.
  • Survivor Stories – Hear from cancer survivors across Maine as they share their unique stories of strength.
  • Healthy Living Series – Add some movement and mindfulness to your weekend with certified instructors.
