RUN IT RIGHT

6x Hawaii IRONMAN champ Mark Allen knows a few things about effective triathlon running.

According to The Grip, the fatigue that you carry into a triathlon run makes you more susceptible to poor pacing… and a very long day out on the course. The difference between a well-paced and poorly paced IRONMAN run can be 30 minutes or more.

In this article Mark describes how your run pacing actually starts on the bike. He offers his tips on how to calculate your bike speed to ensure a successful third leg of the race.

Once on the run, he shares his method of dividing the course into two parts. This will help you maintain your patience and know when to finally pick up the pace. Age groupers like us rarely get a glimpse of valuable insights like these. Apply them in your next race for a strong and satisfying finish.

you are what you eat!

This time last year we were all slowly beginning to accept that it was highly unlikely we would be racing.

Some did - most didn’t.

I thought that meant this business would suffer.

Weirdly it didn’t - it grew.

Because whilst we are all motivated by the thought of a race - it isn’t the main reason we do this.

We do it because it makes us feel good.

Being fit is a nice feeling.

Looking after yourself gives us a sense of pride.

The problem is that some people think to do it, you have to live a life of sacrifice.

You do NOT.

Good nutrition and training is all about balance.

Without rest, the training is useless.

Without ice cream a diet is boring.

So as race day looms now, what can you do nutritionally?

The most important thing is to get your day to day diet 80-90% right.

For most people that means:

  • Fruits and veggies
  • Lean proteins
  • Unprocesed carbs
  • All in the right quantities.

That makes it sound pretty simple and it is often the quantities where people go wrong.

That and lack of consistency.

Because 80% good doesn’t sound hard, BUT if you have bad weeks that means you need to string lots of good weeks together to make up for it.

If though you just have a less good day, you only need a good few days.

Or my preference, have a bit of what you fancy every day but mostly good stuff.

For me, that helps with sanity and consistency and I know it’s a game changer for most people.

It gets us away from the all or nothing approach - which unless you are an olympic athlete or someone who gets paid for training is not what this is about.

It’s about being fit. Getting faster. Being healthy.

And enjoying it

Nail the day to day.

Begin race day prep 1 week out.

Enjoy some “non diet” foods everyday.

Don’t binge. Love what you eat. Love how it makes you feel. And look!
