A Word from the Pastor

September 2, 2022

A parish is a living organism with many parts that all work together so that the mission of Christ may continue. As the song says: “We are many parts; we are all one Body.” All of these many parts make up the Body of Christ in this parish.

Many people use their gifts in a wide variety of ministries. The word ministry means “service.” I am so grateful that we have so many people who are willing to serve their brothers and sisters in so many ways. We have ministries of youth and adult faith formation. We have outreach to the poor and homeless. We promote respect for life. We have a variety of groups that bring people together and build up our community. There are too many ministries to mention them all.

I would like to focus for a moment on our liturgical ministries. We are in need of additional ministers in all areas of the celebration of the liturgy:

  • We need additional Special Ministers of Holy Communion. We have openings in all Masses. In particular, we need ministers who would bring Holy Communion to the Sick or Homebound.
  • We need Lectors who will proclaim the Scripture readings at Mass.
  • We are ready to resume Altar Servers. This is open to young people in 3rd to 8th grade and even older (from any school).
  • Our choirs and music groups are always looking for new members.
  • We need Ministers of Hospitality to welcome people to our celebrations and take up the collection.
  • We would like to have at least one Sacristan for each Mass. This person makes sure that everything is needed for Mass is prepared and ready.

We provide training for each of these ministries. The major qualification is a willingness to serve. If you would like to volunteer for a ministry or to ask for further information, contact Joni Yribe, our Director of Liturgy and Music ([email protected] or 760-729-2866).

While I am speaking about ministries, I want to bring to your attention that we have parishioners who are commissioned to bring Holy Communion to those who cannot come to church for Mass. During the height of the pandemic, this ministry was restricted. Now we are back at full strength. If you or someone in your family or household is not able to come to church, we can arrange for them to receive Holy Communion at home on a regular basis. To find out more about this, contact Jayce McClellan ([email protected] or 760-729-2866).

Have a safe and joyful holiday weekend.

In one Heart,

Fr. Ron

Our parish offices will be closed on Monday, September 5 in observance of Labor Day.

There will be one Mass on Labor Day at 9:00 am.

Why Catholics Celebrate

Labor Day

As we celebrate Labor Day, it is an opportunity to reflect on the meaning the Catholic Church sees in human labor. The linked article appeared several years ago in the US Catholic magazine. It provides a good summary of Catholic Social Teaching on work. It gives us a way of looking at work from the perspective of the Creator.

10,000 Reasons to Bless the Lord

This praise and worship song invites us to give thanks to the Lord for so many reasons.

First Day of School

Outreach with Synod Survey

As a part of the Synod process, our Diocese continues to seek the feedback of as many people as possible. That is why Cardinal designate McElroy is encouraging that each and everyone of us participate in a survey that will further assist the church in better ministering at all levels. All those who receive our parish email newsletter will receive the survey sent directly to them in early September.

But we want to reach out beyond those who are coming to church and active in the parish. We want to hear from those members who have distanced themselves from the Catholic Church or perhaps left the Catholic faith completely. Their voices matter to us!

We invite you to help in this effort. Please use the following QR code to personally invite someone who may not otherwise know of this opportunity to take the survey. A paper with the QR code can also be found in the pews of the church during the month of September. They are also available in the parish office. Take as many as you like. Let’s be proactive and invite family members, friends or neighbors to share their input.

The survey will be open online for 30 days beginning September 6. We look forward to hearing from you!

Season of Creation

The Season of Creation is the time of year when the world’s 2.2 billion Christians are invited to pray and care for creation. It runs annually from September 1, the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation, through October 4, the Feast of St. Francis.

In 2015, Our Holy Father Pope Francis wrote an encyclical that teaches about the dignity of creation and our responsibility to care for it. Each week of the month, we will include a flyer that makes suggestions on how we might show greater care for the Earth, Our Common Home.

Click on both of the attachments below. One is a brief introduction; the other is a short reflection on the theme of the first week of this year’s Season of Creation.

Have you wondered about becoming a Catholic?

  • Do you have a family member who is considering the Catholic faith?
  • Were you baptized but never received Christian formation or the other sacraments?
  • Are you an adult who was never confirmed?

If you answered “yes” to any of these questions or if you just have a lot of questions about being Catholic, the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is for you. A new group is forming now. They will meet every Tuesday beginning in September and continuing until Easter 2023.

Gospel Reading

Luke 14:25-33

Jesus teaches about the demands of discipleship.

Background on the Gospel Reading

In chapter 14 of Luke's Gospel, Jesus is speaking to people gathered at the table about the difficulties of following him. This group of people is suspicious about Jesus, looking to catch him doing something wrong. Jesus speaks to them in parables, emphasizing that although there is a right way to be a disciple and enter into the kingdom of his Father, it is a difficult path to follow. Many, even some of the guests at the table, reject the invitation. So Jesus turns to the crowds and speaks to them of discipleship. Jesus explains that, when it comes to making a choice for the Kingdom of God, nothing can get in the way. When Jesus describes “hating” one's father and mother, he is not talking about feelings. Rather, he is emphasizing very strongly that choosing to be a disciple means that everything else—family, money, your own life—must come second. In Matthew's version of this story (Matthew 10:37), Jesus refers not to “hating” father or mother, but to loving them more than Jesus. Jesus makes it very clear that being a disciple is not easy. It means to bear one's own cross. These difficult sayings of Jesus are followed by two brief parables (a person constructing a tower and a king marching into battle) that make an obvious point—don't start what you cannot finish. Discipleship is difficult and is something we can commit to only if we are prepared to put the Kingdom of God before everything else.

The book of Matthew brings the history of Christ to life. We see Jesus as the awaited Messiah who fulfills the promises and prophecies of the Old Testament, establishes the New Law, and inaugurates the kingdom of heaven. Matthew: The King and His Kingdom, a twenty-four-part Bible study, explores how Jesus is challenging and empowering us to a new level of holiness and shows how we must be thoroughly immersed in the kingdom of heaven on earth, the Church, to live it.

St. Patrick’s Ruah Adonai – Breath of God Bible Study group will hold registration for the 2022-23 bible study on the gospel of Matthew the weekend of September 10 and 11. Please join us on the patio to register.

If you would like to preview the study on-line go to

The Knights of Columbus would like to invite our parish and friends to our annual Oktoberfest celebration on

September 24, from 5:00 – 8:00 in the Parish Hall.

We will have Traditional German Music a raffle and German Beer. Tip-Top Meats will be providing the German sausage and sauerkraut. Tickets will be $20.00 each and will be on sale on the patio after all the weekend Masses.

Appreciation Luncheon for Tercera Edad

On Saturday, August 27, our Spanish community held a special luncheon for the older members of the community (tercera edad). Its purpose was to show appreciation to our elderly who are often forgotten, only called upon when they are needed. We wanted to remind them that they are important and very much loved.

The pictures show some of the invited guests as well as the members of the community who cooked and served a delicious Italian meal.

Ukrainian/Afghan Refugees

Ukraine and Afghanistan seem to be fading from our news services, but the needs of the people in these countries are still very real.  How can we help? That’s what goes through my mind every day.  Our brothers and sisters at Jewish Family Services are doing something. They are enabling groups of caring people here in SD to sponsor families (already vetted) from these countries. These groups help them find lodging, English classes, schools for their children, and help them understand the banking system, shopping and social services.

We will have a zoom meeting on Thursday, Sept. 15th at 6:00 pm to hear about the program and ask questions. If you would like to help with sponsoring a family, please contact Chris Durnan ([email protected] or call 760-533-7139). She will send you the zoom link.  This presentation will be limited to one hour. Let’s be God’s love in the world!
