A Word from the Pastor

September 1, 2023

We have all heard about the latest technology to hit the world: Artificial Intelligence (AI). There is much debate about the pros and cons of AI as well as its ethical implications. That being said, there are many good uses for AI today and in the future.

I want to share with you one application of AI that I think can be of great use to curious Catholics. It is called Magisterium AI and can be accessed at www.magisterium.com

Magisterium AI makes accessible to everyone the teaching of the Catholic Church in a way that has never been available before. Whether you’re seeking answers on a particular Church teaching, conducting research, or are just trying to save some time, this application will help you access a clear and concise answer. Magisterium AI currently searches almost 3,000 Church documents in answer to user questions. Additional information is being added every day.

These documents of the Catholic Church fall within the categories of Extraordinary and Ordinary Magisterium. “Magister” means teacher. Extraordinary magisterium refers to dogmas pronounced by an ecumenical council or an infallible teaching by the pope. Ordinary magisterium includes regular teachings like encyclicals, catechisms, homilies, and pastoral letters by the pope and other bishops.

The site will be of interest to Church leaders, catechists, school teachers, parents and anyone who wants to have access to good Catholic sources. It is easy to use. You just type in a question or a topic. I asked it “What is the Church’s teaching on capital punishment?” It gave me a clear and concise answer with references to the Church documents that speak on this topic. I am told that I can ask it to write a homily on Sunday’s readings (but I assure you I won’t be doing that.)

The program is currently in Beta which means that it’s still being tested and improved. Since AI can learn and improve itself with use, the more it gets used, the better it will become.

I have already had some fun exploring the capability of this new tool. I know that many of you are looking for online access to reliable Catholic teaching. The information Magisterium AI provides is authentic Catholic Church teaching. It is neither “liberal” nor “conservative.”

You can use the site as much as you want. For the moment it is free. You can give them your email if you’d like to receive occasional updates about new documents and new features added to Magisterium AI. They promise to be respectful and not spam your account. So far, I have found this to be true.

I invite you to explore this new technology. Let me know what you think.

In one Heart,

Fr. Ron

Book Giveaway

Through the generosity of several parishioners, we are able to offer a small book free of charge to our parishioners. The book is entitled This Is My Body: A Call to Eucharistic Revival by Bishop Robert Barron. In this brief but illuminating text, Bishop Barron offers a threefold analysis of the Eucharist as (1) sacred meal, (2) sacrifice, and (3) real presence, “helping readers to understand the sacrament of Christ’s Body and Blood more thoroughly so that they might fall in love with him more completely.”

You can pick up your free copy of this book on the weekend of September 9-10 on the church patio after our English Masses. Please take only one book per family and consider sharing it with a friend.

Annual Catholic Appeal

As we move into the last quarter of this year, it is time to think about your donation to the Annual Catholic Appeal (ACA). It is the opportunity we have to contribute to the good work being done by Catholic Charities and various pastoral ministries of the Diocese.

Our parish goal (the actual amount we will be assessed) is $96,625.00. To date, we have collected $71,582.22 in cash and pledges. That means we are still $25,042.78 short of our goal. If we do not reach that goal, we will be assessed the balance.

Reminder: no money donated to ACA can be used for legal fees or bankruptcy settlement. ACA is a restricted fund that can only be used for the purpose and intention of the donors.

Give to the ACA for our Parish here...

Learn More about the Eucharist

As a part of the Diocesan Institute, Fr. Ron Bagley will be teaching a six week course entitled The Eucharist and Sunday. It will be held here at St. Patrick Parish Center on Tuesday evenings, beginning on September 12, 6:30-9:00 pm and concluding on October 24 (skipping September 26).

The course will explore the biblical and liturgical meaning of Sunday, and the Eucharist, sacrament of the Paschal Mystery, as source and summit of the Christian life. Because this course will explore the biblical, theological and liturgical foundations of the Eucharist, it is very appropriate at the beginning of the National Eucharistic Revival year.

Registration is being handled by the Diocesan Institute office. Contact them at https://sdcatholic.org/office-for/diocesan-institute/course-schedule/ or call (858) 490-8212. This course can be used for credit toward diocesan certification or for personal enrichment. If you have questions, contact Fr. Ron.

Gospel Reading

Matthew 16:21-27

Jesus speaks of his Passion and rebukes Peter for his objection.

Background on the Gospel

Reading

Today’s Gospel continues the story that began in last week’s Gospel. Simon Peter was called the “rock” upon which Jesus would build his Church, and yet Peter continues to show the limitations of his understanding of Jesus’ identity. Now that the disciples have acknowledged that Jesus is the Messiah, Jesus confides in them the outcome of his ministry: he must suffer and die in Jerusalem to be raised on the third day. Peter rejects this prediction, and Jesus rebukes him severely, calling him “Satan.” In opposing this aspect of Jesus’ mission, Peter shows that he is no longer speaking based on the revelation from God but as a human being. Jesus then teaches all of the disciples about the difficult path of discipleship: to be Christ’s disciple is to follow in his way of the cross.

Peter could not yet understand what it meant to call Jesus the Messiah. It is unlikely that the other disciples understood any better. Messianic expectations were a common aspect of first-century Judaism. Under Roman occupation, many in Israel hoped and prayed that God would send a Messiah to free the Jews from Roman oppression. The common view was that the Messiah would be a political figure, a king that would free Israel from Roman rule. This is perhaps what Peter envisioned when he was led to recognize Jesus as the Messiah. In this passage, however, Jesus is beginning to teach his disciples that he would be the Messiah in a different way.

Jesus would be more like the suffering servant described by the prophet Isaiah than the political liberator. Those who would be Jesus' disciples would be called to a similar life of service. Perhaps this is what Peter feared most in Jesus’ prediction of his Passion. He whom Jesus had called “rock” would also be called upon to offer himself in sacrifice and service to others. Christian leaders today are still called to sacrifice and serve others as Jesus did.

Ruah Adonai to Resume Bible Study on October 4

A Biblical Walk Through the Mass (5 sessions) “The Mass is nothing short of amazing. Through it, we encounter God in the most intimate way possible as we hear him speak to us in the Liturgy of the Word and as we receive him Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity in the Holy Eucharist.” Watch a video clip here

Prophets: Messengers of God's Mercy (10 sessions) “God sent prophets at critical times to call the people back to their covenant relationship. Prophets proclaimed the consequences of continued sin, called people to repentance, and declared God’s faithful love. They also spoke of the future to shed light on current events and to reveal God’s plans and purposes.” Watch a video clip here

Ruah Adonai - Breath of God Bible Study is open to men and women. No previous bible study experience needed. Our mission is to know, to love and to serve God.
