Free Trial of Laser in September

Lightforce Class IV Deep Tissue Laser Therapy

Do you have a pain that just won't go away?

Low-level laser therapy promotes: central and peripheral neuron repair; suppression of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2); enhancement of peripheral endogenous opioids; upregulation of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF); angiogenesis; collagen synthesis and decorin expression during tendon and ligament repair; reduction in fibrosis, suppression of conduction along unmyelinated C fibers; and inhibition of histamine release.

Low-level laser irradiation can have a positive response for tissues that exhibit microvascular compromise and become anoxic secondary to metabolic injury with resulting microvascular inflammation, oxidative injury, and mitochondrial dysfunction. Lasers of low-intensity initiate analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and biostimulatory effects, resulting in an increase in local microcirculation and increased healing. Increasing microcirculation induces an essential function in the tissue repair process and in pain control. This process allows increases in oxygenation and nutritional supply to tissues. This process allows for the expulsion of metabolic byproducts, which may contribute to pain.

One. is offering a free trial of Deep Tissue Laser for new clients in the month of September.

Before Reaching For That Weighted Vest, You May Want To Take A Pause

The internet is exploding right now filled with trendy images of weighted vests and expounding on all the virtues of using vest during workouts and everyday activities.

Before you jump on the bandwagon, you may want to consider a few things.

-Every pound that you lift or carry translates to 10X that load onto your spine.

-If you have a pre existing back problem, a weighted vest could exacerbate your condition

-Most folks who don a weighted vest and then go about doing normal everyday activities are probably not thinking about their posture or activating their core muscles to support their spine. This could put you at risk for developing a back injury by forcing your spine into an exacerbated anterior tilt of your pelvis causing compression of your spinal canal.

-Soldiers on the battlefield are affected by heavy body armor and excessive march load. It is well known, but the long-term effects of this extra weight on the musculoskeletal system of military veterans, specifically the lumbar spine, are unclear. In Iraq and Afghanistan, most body armors weighed over 33 pounds. A study in 2024 found that military veterans experience lower back pain at an average age of 35 years. This is at least 5 years earlier than non-service men. Veterans in the study believe that their lower back pain is related to their service. Click here for full article

-Safer ways to build muscle or improve bone density include working out with bands or springs, less load=less compression on the joints

-Contact your local physical therapist to find out if weighted vests are for you and to review best practices in the use of this seemingly benign exercise tool that could have unintended negative health consequences if not used correctly.

Is the Bread in Europe Better for You?

-New York Times July 2025

If you’ve noticed that certain baked goods are more tolerable abroad, it may not be all in your head.

Go eat bread in Italy,” he said. “You don’t feel bad at all.”

Dr. Alessio Fasano, a gastroenterologist at Mass General Brigham, said he had heard similar accounts from many of his patients with certain types of wheat sensitivities.

When they eat wheat products in the United States, his patients say, they have bloating, nausea, diarrhea, constipation, joint pain, fatigue or brain fog. When they eat wheat products — particularly bread — in Western Europe, they have fewer or milder symptoms.

There isn’t solid research on why this may be, Dr. Fasano said. But he and other experts have some theories.

Theory No. 1: The wheat is different.

A prominent explanation on social media is that the bread in Europe contains less gluten than the bread in the United States and therefore causes fewer symptoms in people who are sensitive to it.

It’s true that the main type of wheat grown in Europe is “soft” wheat, which results in bread with less gluten, and the wheat typically grown in the United States and Canada is “hard” wheat, which makes bread with more gluten, said Brett Carver, an expert on wheat genetics at Oklahoma State University.

Theory No. 2: The dough is fermented longer.

If you buy a loaf from a small bakery in Europe, the bread was probably made with a long fermentation period, Dr. Fasano said.

During fermentation, microbes such as yeast and bacteria break down some of the gluten in the dough. The longer the fermentation time, the less gluten remains, which could result in fewer symptoms in people with gluten sensitivities, Dr. Fasano said.

Traditional sourdough breads, which are commonly made in Europe, have long fermentation periods lasting 12 to 48 hours, Dr. Zannini said.

The yeast and bacteria in sourdoughs can break down not only gluten, but also certain types of difficult-to-digest carbohydrates called FODMAPs, which can cause symptoms like bloating, abdominal pain, constipation and diarrhea in some people, said Jane Muir, an associate professor of translational nutrition science at Monash University in Australia. As a result, she said, people who get those symptoms after eating wheat may be able to tolerate traditional sourdough breads.

Some bakeries in the United States do make bread, including sourdoughs, with long fermentation times, but such bakeries are more common in Europe, Dr. Zannini said.

Most bread in the United States is fermented much faster — for just an hour or two — leaving more gluten and FODMAPs that can cause symptoms.

Theory No. 3: The bread in Europe contains fewer additives.

US manufacturers add ingredients like dough conditioners, strengthening agents, extra gluten and emulsifiers to improve its texture, as well as preservatives to lengthen its shelf life.

Theory No. 4: The bread in Europe is less likely to contain glyphosate.

Wheat growers in the United States sometimes apply glyphosate — an herbicide used to kill weeds, and in some cases to dry out the wheat itself — to the crop just before harvest. This can leave glyphosate residues on the grain. Growers in Europe, on the other hand, must abide by stricter rules. They can’t use glyphosate close to harvest, for example, so there is less chance that residues will be left on the crop.

Theory No. 5: Everything is better on vacation.

If you’re traveling through Europe, you’re probably more relaxed than usual, Dr. Muir said. “Stress is a very big part of the sensitivity” in your gut, she said.

If you’ve found that the bread in Europe is more tolerable than the bread in the United States, it’s probably not all in your head, Dr. Muir said.

The good news is that you can likely find bread you enjoy in the United States as well.

Seek out bakeries that sell traditional sourdough breads, meaning they were made with few ingredients and long fermentation periods, Dr. Muir said. Consult bakery websites and ingredient lists or ask employees how their breads are made.

And beware “fake” sourdough breads, often found in grocery stores, that may say “sourdough” on the package but were made with shorter fermentation times. You can spot a fake by looking at the ingredient list — if it is long and includes acids like lactic acid or vinegar (which give the bread a sour flavor), that’s a sign.

Practical applications of grounding to support health

An ever expanding body of research over the past several decades suggest that directly touching the earth, a practice known as grounding, puts the body into a healing state.

Grounding may play a role in not only improving the body's natural ability to function, but may also play a role in the healing of disease and the prevention of disease development in the first place.

Because our bodies are entirely conductive — every cell, the cytoplasm of each cell, the cytoskeleton of each cell, every fluid in the body (including blood, cerebrospinal fluid, synovial fluid, plasma and more), every tissue, and every organ system — the entirety of our anatomy is conductive. When we touch the earth in any way, we become a part of this global electrical circuit through the nature of our innate conductivity. In fact, it is only recently that we have ever lived disconnected from this natural global circuit, as it is only recently that we wear plastic shoes, live and work and learn and shop and eat in insulated indoor dwellings, even riding up off the earth in rubber tired vehicles and flying up away from the surface of the earth in aircrafts. Because we no longer connect all day long to the earth's natural energy circuit, we must intentionally ground our body to it in order to become a part of this global electrical circuit, a practice known as grounding.

Grounding to the global electrical grid yields health benefits

25 years of medical research now backs this up. Researchers have exhaustively looked at the human body while it is connected to the earth, and found that the body goes into a deeply healing state while grounded. We benefit from grounding with a boosted heart rate variability (HRV) [13], increased blood perfusion of our tissues [14] and blood that flows more easily, with decreased viscosity [15]. Our immune system function (including immunoglobulins and white blood cells) get a boost [16], our muscles are more supported during exertion [17] and are less sore afterwards [18,19] our brain gets much needed support immediately, with electroencephalogram (EEG) studies of brain activity show that grounding instantaneously shifts our brain wave patterns and reduces ambient stress levels [20] along with supporting deeper, more restorative sleep at night [21], boosting sleep quality [22] and improving our body's autonomic function through vagal tone support [23]. Grounding even supports our metabolic function as a whole, boosting our basal metabolic rate [24]. Grounding helps to resolves the cascade of inflammation and autoimmune signaling in hormonal pathways that may ultimately lead to thyroid hormone imbalances, cortisol or sex hormone imbalances, all which can lead to issues such as adrenal fatigue, hypothyroidism, insomnia and more [25,26].

Grounding exerts full body benefits, as every single organ system gets a boost of blood flow and oxygen because grounding positively impacts our cardiovascular function, improving circulation. Over time, hormones normalize, cortisol drops, blood sugar stabilizes, sleep deepens, inflammation decreases, and the human body heals.

When you disconnect from the earth, by putting on shoes, going inside your home, or driving in your car, you disconnect from the earth's global electrical circuit. You have become unplugged from the natural flow of DC energy in this system and are operating instead as a closed loop.
