Mt 7:7-12

Jesus said to his disciples:

“Ask and it will be given to you;

seek and you will find;

knock and the door will be opened to you.

For everyone who asks, receives; and the one who seeks, finds;

and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.

Which one of you would hand his son a stone

when he asked for a loaf of bread,

or a snake when he asked for a fish?

If you then, who are wicked,

know how to give good gifts to your children,

how much more will your heavenly Father give good things

to those who ask him.

“Do to others whatever you would have them do to you.

This is the law and the prophets.”

The gospel is part of Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount and is all about how God will give us “good gifts” if we ask, seek, and knock on his door. Many times our prayers seem to go unheard or unanswered. But if we keep on praying, asking, and seeking, good things will happen. It’s just that God knows the best and right time to give. How have you responded when your prayers seemed to go unanswered for a long time?

In this gospel, Jesus invites us to come before God with awaiting hearts asking for what we need. God is always listening to our prayers.

So often, our prayers seem to go unheard or unanswered. But good things happen in God’s own time.



Prayer is never wasted. Good things come in prayer, maybe not what someone asks for. Prayer opens the heart for good things from God. Be grateful at the end of prayer for time spent with the God of all goodness. Prayer time is always a productive time when spent with Jesus and makes us people that can spread love.

Questions to consider:

1. What do we call good gifts that come from God?
2. Will God answer us, if we ask him for something?
3. Should we only pray one time before we give up?
4. What does it mean to “pray continuously?”
5. Does God know what we need more than ourselves?
6. How can we seek God?
7. What is the very best gift that God has given us?
8. How should we treat others?
9. What can you do to show kindness to others?

Beloved God, give us the strength to ask, seek, and knock when we pray to you every day. Give us patience and determination to overcome any struggles that may come our way and peace of mind that you are guiding us on the right path. Remind us to treat others with kindness and spread smiles, laughter, and love whenever we can. We pray this in Jesus’ name, Amen.
