                       March at STRIVE U

March is a very busy and exciting time on the STRIVE U campus. STRIVE U will begin to host prospective students overnight throughout the month of March. This is a part of the STRIVE U application process. The campus plans to host selected applicants who hope to attend STRIVE U! Each week the staff and students will meet two prospective students. One applicant arrives on a Monday afternoons and another arrives on a Wednesday afternoons. When the applicants arrive on campus, they will complete several "Mock Goals". These "Mock Goals" include creating a menu plan and grocery list, budgeting a sum of money, grocery shopping and creating a meal with STRIVE U staff. They are encouraged to engage in a social activity in the student lounge with current students during the evening. The activities may include puzzles, board games and playing Wii! The student then spends the night in a current students' apartment. The following morning, they attend a class at Kaplan University. This is a wonderful opportunity for the prospective students to gain a perspective of what life on campus is like. Both STRIVE U staff and students are very eager and excited to meet the prospective students!  For more information about STRIVE U or to schedule a tour, please contact Bill Hughes, STRIVE U Admissions Coordinator, at   207-774-6278 or bhughes@pslservices.org.

Big News at Bayside

Over the past month we have been putting a lot of focus on riding the bus! Bayside participants have been choosing and mapping their own routes and are learning bus etiquette. Participants have started learning the routes so well they are pulling the cord to stop the bus without any help from staff! Some places we have visited on the bus are Five Guys in South Portland, the Metro Pulse, a pizza place near a new participant's home, and more!

Bayside also had a superstar participant, Nick, graduate in February after three years in the program! We are so proud of him and excited for his future endeavors.

STRIVE Bayside is a unique community supports program that is dedicated to exploring and increasing independence. A sample of goals we work on are grocery shopping, budgeting, cleaning, navigating the community, cooking and social skills. We run five days a week, Monday through Friday and have two daily sessions, 9:00-1:00and 1:00- 5:00. We offer full time (Monday- Friday) and part time (Tuesday, Thursday -or- Monday, Wednesday, Friday) options. We operate out of an apartment in downtown Portland to simulate actual apartment living. We currently have openings in our morning and afternoon sessions. If you would like more information about our program, or to schedule a tour please contact: Caroline Cole at 899-1725 or ccole@pslservices.org

The News from Next Step

While in Next STEP, we are always working on skills to become more independent, so in this month we started on a program called "JOBS." In this program, the Next STEPpers  have a job each day that they are in the program and they each need to be responsible to complete their job by the end of the day.  With this new program the Next STEPpers are learning how to be more independent and have more responsibility!

For curriculum we are learning about money management and saving money. Last month we started on a budget for Next STEP where we had $30 for the week budgeted that we use for program expenses like buying food for Snack Lab and Food Lab or art supplies. Whatever money is left over from that budgeted amount has been put into our "savings account". So far, we have saved $67.38. The money that we save will go a fun activity that the Next STEPpers will choose. We are great savers!

Update from TOPS

Do you recycle?
This month starts the Maine Recycling Championship Competition. TOPS is officially enrolled in the competition and they need your help!  If you use any bottles or cans and think you could fill a CLYNK bag, please swing by STRIVE or our Central Office to pick one up.  If you already have CLYNK Bags, TOPS will gladly send you a few "bag tag" stickers!
Haven't heard of CLYNK?   CLYNK is a program through Hannaford that is a simplified redemption center.  It is very simple; fill a designated green CLYNK bag with bottles and cans, add a "bag tag" sticker to identify which account it goes into, and bring the ba g to your local Hannaford.  At Hannaford, you will find a CLYNK drop off area where you just scan the sticker and drop your bag.  The bottles and cans are counted later and the funds are added to your Hannaford account.  In this case, the funds go toward our compe tition and Hannaford will match every $1.00 raised with $0.50!   Our students are working hard to spread the word and have set a goal to collect 500 bags!
If you would like to see what TOPS is up to every week and read a little more about TOPS, please email Kelly Frey to be added to the Weekly TOPS Newsletter, kfrey@pslservices.org

STRIVE TOPS serves students from school districts in the southern Maine who are in their 13th or 14th year of school. If you have questions or would like more information about TOPS, please contact Betsy Morrison at (207)774-6278 or bmorrison@pslservices.org.
