The Coin
Yasmin Zaher
Finalist for the Gotham Book Prize | A New York Times Book Review Editors' Choice
"A smart, sneering novel of capital and its consequences. In a spiraling, hallucinogenic plot, The Coin draws a dotted line between the narrator’s grandmother’s garden in Palestine and a splatter of excrement on New York City subway tiles. The whiplash feels intentional, funny in an absurdist way, like the narrator’s existential seesawing between jaded American consumerism and the sadness and guilt of displacement. The novel’s power is not in cohesion, but in chaos."
—Lauren Christensen, New York Times
". . . in search of her “true essence,” she withdraws into self-flagellating solitude that leads to the novel’s shattering conclusion. A perilous journey, rendered in sensuous prose."
—Kirkus Reviews

Normal People
Sally Rooney
One of Entertainment Weekly's Ten Best Novels of the Decade | Ten Best Books of the Year: People, Slate, The New York Public Library, Harvard Crimson
"A novel that demands to be read compulsively, in one sitting."
—The Washington Post
". . . personal crises and dissembling about feelings push the pair alternatively together and apart up to an open-ended but satisfying conclusion. Rooney crafts a devastating story from a series of everyday sorrows by delicately traversing female and male anxieties over sex, class, and popularity. This is a magnificent novel."

Hip-hop is a global cultural movement that began in 1973 in the South Bronx, driven by African American and Latino youth. It emerged as a response to the criminalization of young people, inadequate educational support, and the neglect of their rundown housing by property owners and the New York City government.
In Hartford, hip-hop culture began to take shape in the late 1970s and early 1980s within neighborhood environments similar to the South Bronx. In 1981, a Real Art Ways (RAW) exhibition featured emerging New York City-based graffiti artists Lady Pink and Crash, who painted on the RAW State Street Hartford walls. A portion of RAW's archives have been donated to the Hartford Public Library's (HPL) Hartford History Center, which has collaborated with RAW to uncover images, footage, and newspaper articles that illustrate RAW's promotion of hip-hop events. Tim Wolf, formerly of Peace Train, contributed photographs, flyers, and recordings documenting the early 1980s b-boying (breakdancing) and popping communities in Hartford. We thank RAW and Tim Wolf for working with us and making these wonderful materials available to the public.
These materials were curated by HPL’s Hartford History Center and were originally presented in November of 2016 in a full exhibition.
