We LOVE all the May day baskets around town and in case you missed it last year, we wanted to share our May Day basket with you from last year. May is jam packed with local events including May Day, Mother's Day, Navy Graduation/Blue Angels and Memorial Day, and with the early warm weather, we are SO excited to get out there to enjoy them all!
This month's newsletter is filled to the brim as always with information about what is happening at One., in our community, and the latest in health information for you to read and hopefully share!
As you read our newsletter either for the first time (welcome to all of our new folks from the What's Next group!), or are returning to it month after month, our continued hope is that you enjoy reading it as much as we enjoy creating it for you. We know how busy everyone is, and it is an honor to know that you take the time to read through our humble publication.

Are you having Hot Flashes?
Vasomotor symptoms (aka hot flashes) occur due to the constriction or dilation of blood vessels which is a result from a reduced production of estradiol (estrogen produced in the ovaries).
84.2% of women experience menopause symptoms which commonly begin in women between the ages of 40 to 50 years of age but most often start at the age of 51. These symptoms are often combined with chills, anxiety, and heart palpitations but not all hot flashes are related to menopause and even men can experience similar heat sensations (for example from excessive alcohol consumption).
No matter the cause, hot flashes can be very uncomfortable and make you feel miserable. The good news is Chinese medicine and acupuncture have been known to reduce and even stop hot flashes all together. From a Chinese medicine standpoint there are different types of hot flashes and therefore different herbal formulas and acupuncture treatments for them.

Do you have a nagging pain that won't go away?

Lightforce Class IV Deep Tissue Laser Therapy
Low-level laser therapy promotes: central and peripheral neuron repair; suppression of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2); enhancement of peripheral endogenous opioids; upregulation of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF); angiogenesis; collagen synthesis and decorin expression during tendon and ligament repair; reduction in fibrosis, suppression of conduction along unmyelinated C fibers; and inhibition of histamine release.
Low-level laser irradiation can have a positive response for tissues that exhibit microvascular compromise and become anoxic secondary to metabolic injury with resulting microvascular inflammation, oxidative injury, and mitochondrial dysfunction.
Lasers of low-intensity initiate analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and biostimulatory effects, resulting in an increase in local microcirculation and increased healing. Increasing microcirculation induces an essential function in the tissue repair process and in pain control. This process allows increases in oxygenation and nutritional supply to tissue and allows for the expulsion of metabolic byproducts, which may contribute to pain.
In other words, it reduces your pain FAST.
(For the month of May, One. is offering a free trial laser session to new clients that have not had laser before.)

Positive Views on Aging Can Sharpen Your Mind and Boost Health and Happiness
New research links cognitive decline to negative perspectives on growing old, adding to other evidence for the power of positivity
Book Author
Independent journalist covering physical health & mental wellness, author of “Make Sleep Your Superpower: A Guide to Greater Health, Happiness & Productivity.”
Apr 12
New research suggests a natural, cost-free way to help maintain thinking skills, one that individuals of all ages, and society as a whole, would be wise to lean into:
Think positively about the aging process.
MCI is marked by an increased tendency to forget appointments, lose keys, struggle to come up with the right words, or other such lapses. Unlike dementia, MCI doesn’t involve personality changes or other more serious or dramatic consequences. Causes can include diabetes, stroke, depression, or simply the consequences of genetics and aging. MCI, which affects somewhere between 12% and 18% of people 60 and older, can be a precursor to Alzheimer’s and other dementias, but it does not always predict such outcomes.
The new study was based on data collected on 1,716 seniors seven times over 12 years. MCI was determined by tests of such things as the ability to recall a set of words immediately and after a delay, as well as counting backward from a large number by sevens.
“We found that those who have taken in more positive age beliefs were significantly less likely to develop MCI,” Levy told me. “If, however, they developed MCI, the positive age beliefs acted as a resource to help them cognitively recover.”

5-minute breathing exercises can improve your mood and reduce anxiety
Cyclic sighing appears to be particularly effective among different breathing exercises and better than mindfulness meditation, a study says
By
March 16, 2023 at 6:00 a.m. EDT
A study in Cell Reports Medicine showed that just five minutes of breathwork each day for about a month could improve mood and reduce anxiety — and these benefits may be larger than from mindfulness meditation for the same amount of time.
In a randomized controlled study of 108 adults, the researchers compared three different breathwork exercises, in which participants deliberately guided their breathing in various ways, and mindfulness meditation, in which people observed their breathing but didn’t try to control it. The participants did the breathwork at home, following video instructions.
After 28 days, participants in both the mindfulness meditation and breathwork groups reported having more positive feelings and fewer negative ones compared with before they began their respective practices. Participants in both groups also reported reduced feelings of anxiety.
The positive effects of breathwork took time to kick in: The more days the participants spent doing their breathing exercises, the better they felt each successive day.
Cyclic sighing appeared to be particularly effective among the different breathing exercises. Participants in this group reported even greater positive mood improvements compared with participants who practiced mindfulness meditation.
(slowly inhale through the nose to expand the lungs, and inhale again to maximally fill the lungs, then slowly and fully exhale the breath through the mouth)
One recent meta-analysis conducted by Gemignani and his colleagues suggests that slow breathing practices can affect our autonomic system, which regulates key physiological processes such as heart rate, blood pressure and breathing. Specifically, these techniques seem to shift the balance away from the amped-up fight-or-flight sympathetic mode toward the more relaxed rest-and-digest parasympathetic system.

One of our clients is starting a support group for Annapolis area adults with EDS and or hypermobility and/or parents of children with EDS and related conditions.
Please share below with anyone you think might be interested.
Thanks everyone!
Jennifer Balducci
The Ehlers-Danlos syndromes (EDS) are a group of 13 heritable connective tissue disorders. The conditions are caused by genetic changes that affect connective tissue. Each type of EDS has its own set of features with distinct diagnostic criteria. Some features are seen across all types of EDS, including joint hypermobility, skin hyperextensibility, and tissue fragility.
What is joint hypermobility?
Joint hypermobility means that a person’s joints have a greater range of motion than is expected or usual. Some people have joint hypermobility that does not cause them pain or other issues. However, some people with joint hypermobility also have joint instability. Joint instability occurs when the bones of a joint aren’t held in place securely. This can lead to joint subluxations, dislocations, sprains, and other injuries. Joint instability can cause both acute and chronic pain and interfere with daily life.
Joint hypermobility is observed throughout the body in most types of EDS, but hypermobility may be limited to the hands and feet in some types. Although joint hypermobility is observed across all types of EDS, not everyone with a type of EDS has joint hypermobility. You can read more about joint hypermobility here.
EDS support group in Annapolis
What: informal in person support group coordinated by a mom with "moderate" EDS who is parenting a teen with life-changing EDS symptoms and many of the related conditions as well including PoTS, MCAS, etc
When: monthly, on a set day and time to make planning easier. In the evening or on a weekend morning. We can decide based on who is interested.
Where: to keep it simple, we'll pick a public place with ample parking, likely a coffee shop or local restaurant with small plates etc
Why: because EDS is hard, complicated, ever-changing, etc and there simply aren't enough qualified medical professionals or proven treatments to make it easy to navigate or manage as a parent or patient. So I figure we all could use some support - a safe place to share and explore in order to get more answers and just feel a little better.

May Day is one of the most beautiful days in Annapolis. On May 1st the doors of homes and businesses in our centuries-old City of Annapolis are adorned with baskets full of fresh-cut flowers and colorful ribbons. If you haven't yet treated yourself to a stroll along the streets of Annapolis' Historic District on this day of days, this is the year to indulge.
Be sure to take plenty of photos of the colorful baskets and post them to social media using the hashtags #maydayannapolis2023 and #68thannapolismayday.
What began as a Garden Club of Old Annapolis Towne beautification project in 1956 has grown into a tradition in which residents and business owners compete for winning ribbons and an invitation to the Garden Club's Annual Tea.
The 68th annual May basket competition, sponsored by the Garden Club of Old Annapolis Towne, will be held Monday, May 1 in celebration of May Day. Residents and merchants in the Historic District, and parts of Murray Hill, are encouraged to arrange baskets of fresh-cut flowers to display outside their homes and businesses. Residential arrangements must be in baskets and include a card indicating the name of the participant; merchants can use a container that reflects an element of their business. All displays must be out by 10:00 a.m. on May 1 for judging by garden club members. Adult blue ribbon winners will receive an invitation to a special May Day Tea on Thursday, May 4.

Fundraising for Barn Raising
Breakfast benefit to transform barn into wellness & meeting space.
– Where some see an old red barn, leaders at a local addiction recovery facility see potential.
“We purchased property adjacent to our campus two years ago,” said Tom O’Leary, president, Samaritan House board of directors. “There is a perfect old red barn on the land that will make a great wellness center, meeting space and office accommodations but first it needs extensive work.”
Giving the old barn new life as a wellness center for residents of the Samaritan House is the goal of the 10th Annual Burritos for Beds breakfast benefit on Wednesday, May 3, 7-10am, at Chevy’s Fresh Mex (2436 Solomons Island Road, Annapolis). The public is invited to enjoy a delicious breakfast and donate to this “barn raising” project.
Contractors estimate it will cost $75,000 for the space transformation. Samaritan House Board members have pledged to donate half of that amount and are asking supporters to match them in giving. Monetary donations can be made at the event or online at samaritanhouseannapolis.org/giving

EAT MORE BEANS!
In a survey of the diet of 673 Ikarians (blue zone residents that live well into their 100's). It's found that subjects consumed about six times as many beans a day as Americans, ate fish twice a week and meat five times a month, drank on average two to three cups of coffee a day and took in about a quarter as much refined sugar — the elderly did not like soda. She also discovered they were consuming high levels of olive oil along with two to four glasses of wine a day.
