What food makes you happy? For me, it's blueberries! And, I'm happy that Altar Cross Farms is back!
If you're looking for an easy Memorial Day dessert, get yourself some strawberries from Kalawi Farm, add it to the blueberries, and top with whipped cream. Voila!

To kick it up a notch with dessert, try making an American Flag cake. It also works for 4th of July, but, I like making it now since local, fresh blueberries and strawberries are in season.
Ingredients
- 3/4 cup unsalted butter
- 1 1/3 cups sugar
- 4 large egg whites
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 cup whole milk
- 2 1/4 cups flour
- 2 1/4 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
-
16 ounces Cool Whip (Homemade Version)
- 1 pint blueberries
- 2 pounds strawberries, halved
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and butter and flour a 9x13 rectangular pan.
- To your stand mixer add the butter and sugar and beat them together until light and fluffy on medium speed, 2-3 minutes, then add in the eggs one at a time 15 seconds apart along with the vanilla then lower the speed to low and add the milk until smooth.
- Sift together the flour, baking powder and salt then add to the stand mixer on low speed until just combined.
-
Pour into the rectangular pan and bake, shake gently back and forth to make sure the batter is evenly distributed and cook for 30-35 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean.
- Once cooled, spread cool whip over the top.
- Dry your fruit very well with a paper towel, place blueberries in top left corner, and arrange strawberries in stripes.

A note about dogs at the market:
- We are a dog friendly market.
- Dogs must be on a leash at all times.
- Make sure your dog is up to date on all vaccines.
- Dogs MUST BE friendly! If you've ever had any issues with your dog, please leave it home.
- If we determine your dog is being aggressive, we will ask you to leave the market.
- Safety of our shoppers, their children, and their dogs is of the utmost importance.
- The weather is getting hotter. We will not tolerate a dog being left in a hot car. I'll be happy to watch your dog at the information tent while you shop.
- Water is provided at the information tent.
- Please clean up after your dog.

The Western Wake Farmers Market will be hosting its first blood drive on June 25th. There are numerous types of blood donations. This is the whole blood donation, which is the most common type of donation, during which approximately a pint of 'whole blood' is given. This type of blood donation usually takes about an hour. Please schedule an appointment and share the link with friends and family. The American Red Cross and the Western Wake Farmers Market thank you, in advance, for your donations!
