I became acquainted with observing Midsummer's Day (the summer solstice) after moving to Wisconsin. Some of the Europeans who settled here celebrated the day with feasts, bonfires, music, and dancing -- as they had in the Old World.

The summer solstice is the year's longest day, sunlight-wise. Mr. Ernst and I find the abundance of light to be energizing, and good for all our gardening, writing, and travel plans.
We hope it proves so for you and yours too.

  Small Town Getaways

One of my intentions as an author has always been to entice readers to visit the historic places where my stories are set. Imagine my delight when Smithsonian Magazine picked three of them for their 2017 Best 20 Small Towns to Visit  list.

Harpers Ferry, WV. My first published book  is a children's historical fiction story,
set in and around this historic town during the Civil War

Mineral Point, WI. This charming town in the SW corner of the Badger state is the setting for the eighth Chloe mystery,   Mining For Justice (due out early this fall.)

De Smet, SD . T he sixth Chloe mystery, Death on the Prairie, revolves around a road trip to visit the many homesteads of Laura Ingalls Wilder. There's a lot to see in De Smet, including the surveyors' house and trees planted by Charles Ingalls.

The Smithsonian picked these 20 based on their "local culture, history, and natural beauty." To see the full list, click HERE.

  Happy Travels

I hope these long summer days will tempt you to explore some new town, museum, or historic place. I'll be doing some of that myself -- partly for fun, partly because I'm always on the hunt for new places and stories to inspire my own work.

Wherever your path may take you this summer, happy travels! And happy reading too.

Warm regards,
